What to Wear Now: Oversized Cardigans

The one purchase I've already gotten the most use out of this season is my oversized, chunky cardigan. I like to wear mine with skinny jeans and tees, but it would go just as well with leggings. If you haven't tried this trend yet, you will surprised at how a simple shift in proportion -- to a longer sweater -- makes your basics look new again.

How to Wear Ankle Boots

jennifer lopezThe trick to pulling off ankle boots is to make sure the proportion of your outfit is right by pairing ankle boots with pieces that really work: short skirts, leggings and skinny jeans. Jennifer Lopez (left) pulls off the look by topping it off with a black jacket (balances out the harshness of the bootie) and bare legs (sexy!) I like to wear ankle boots with skinny jeans and black tights because, well, it's easy and flattering. But there are so many ways to pull off ankle boots that there's something for every girl. Fashion's Chic Past in Pics

If you love the rich history of fashion from houses like Dior and Pierre Cardin, you'll love Life's online gallery of their best fashion photos. Also, view galleries of vintage Christian Dior and vintage Yves Saint Laurent (amazing how modern his 30+ year-old designs look today like these sexy tall boots and fur coat.)

5 Things You Should Never Wear

overallsLots of things bother me: Uggs, white shoes of any kind, long print maxi dresses. But there are only 5 things I say you should never, ever wear as a grown woman. See what my fashion pet peeves are (Hint: I hate overalls on grown women. I don't even care that Martha Stewart thinks it's a good look for her.) Then chime in with your own ideas about what grown women shouldn't wear. (Photo Credit: Plush Studios/Getty images)

I *Heart* Sweater Dresses

sweaterdressChilly days are here to stay for a while, but that doesn't mean you have to give up your beloved dresses for work and play. Instead of flimsy material, just opt for a sweater dress now. Unlike the clingy, unflattering sweater dresses from the past the newest sweater dress styles come in shape-enhancing styles for almost every body type. Take Banana Repulic's sweater dress (pictured left.) It features what has become my standby style of the season: a blouson with shorter skirt. Paired with opaque tights, this dress can go to most offices; with something sheerer and a sexier shoe it goes out for the night. (Photo Credit: Banana Republic.com)

Have You Ever Been Tricked by a Skinny Mirror?

My skinny mirror incident happened just a few weeks ago when what I thought was a swanky little black dress in a flattering shift silhouette turned out to look like a maternity dress at home (and not a very good one at that.) The elusive skinny mirror theory is a tough one to prove. I mean, things like lighting and atmosphere affect your perception of how you look in the mirror (for example, I always like the way I look in an Anthropologie mirror because the dressing room at Northpark Mall in Dallas is as cozy as someone's living room and it smells delicious.) Digging deeper into the urban legend of the skinny mirror, I've found that some retailers tilt the mirror back a bit to make you look longer and leaner. Even soda machines are getting into the skinny mirror act, but their mirrored skinny images are created by a rounded form that shows a skinny version of yourself.

What to Buy Now: Party Shoes

wedge shoesThe perfect pair of party shoes a) look sexy b) are dressy and c) will allow you stand, dance or mingle all night in comfort. I think I've found my perfect party shoes that fit these criteria in this pair of Franco Sarto retro-style shoes (Buy Direct). I bought these a few weeks ago and gave them a road test at an event last week. My review? Love them! First, they have a cool retro/deco design that really appeals to me after so many seasons of ugly shoes (sorry, but I wasn't a gladiator convert and all those buckles and straps weren't my thing.) Second, they have some height, but thanks to the patent wedge (really like the combo of suede and patent) they are definitely comfortable. I never buy shoes that hurt my feet. Third, with a price under $100 I thought these were a great deal and also come in red and navy. One tip: if you wear any type of hosiery with these, put in a foot pad at the ball so your feet don't slide forward (I wore patterned tights with these.) (Photo Credit: Zappos.com)

How to Wear Patterned Tights

Patterned tights? On me? I'm more of an opaque black tights girl, but my celebrity stylist friend urged me to try them and I think he's onto something here. Paired with a simple black dress and just about any shoe (yep, even open toed shoes work with these skin-baring tights), patterned tights add lots of texture and interest. For a relatively small investment -- the better, control-top patterned tights can run around $40 -- you can update your little black dress just in time for the holidays.

Fashion for Busy Girls: Buy Basics in Multiples

gap teeOne time-saving shopping habit I adopted early on was snatching up multiple pieces of essential items like perfect black pants, T-shirts and jeans. This season, my go-to long-sleeve tee is from the Gap.jeans It has a wonderful soft finish (cotton/modal) that launders beautifully. I love the V-neck (flattering on all women), the easy price tag ($19.50) and the range of hues. I own cinnabar (Buy Direct), black (Buy Direct), juniper green (Buy Direct) and white (Buy Direct). I also really like the fit of Gap's long and lean jeans (they have the perfect rise and a slight bootcut) so I bought those in multiples this season too: dark wash (Buy Direct), medium tint (Buy Direct) and medium wash (Buy Direct).

What to Wear Now: Fake Fur

fake fur vest With conspicuous consumption a no-no, fake fur is the animal-friendly -- and budget chic way -- to show your wilder side this fall. I really love HSN.com's newest offerings which include this lynx vest for $149 (I would totally wear this with dark skinny jeans and tall boots). I like that it features a belt to cinch in the volume (that's important when dealing with fur -- real or faux -- because the last thing most women need is more fluffiness.) There are also bombers, coats and accessories in the Curations collection (you can also catch the collection on TV via HSN next week, Oct. 20 & 21) (Photo Credit: HSN)

Pills, Thrills and and Couture
08 Jul 03

Textile artist Susie Freeman and practising GP Dr Liz Lee, are an unlikely twosome for an artistic collaboration. More unusual is the work they create - clothes that seem fluffy and frivolous but actually draw attention to medical matters.

Susie Freeman and Liz Lee are old school friends and Susie explains how their collaboration developed: 'We chat like all women do. Liz was very interested in family planning, and wanted to raise awareness of contraceptive methods available.' Around the same time, a U.S. gallery which sold Susie's work, commissioned one of her textile garments decorated with pills. Susie hadn't made such a piece but the mistaken request sparked an idea - combine Susie's dramatic fabrics with Liz's medical objectives.

Their idea, which they called Inside Out, won them a Sci-Art Award in 1998 - a grants scheme sponsored by the Wellcome Trust encouraging collaborations between scientists and artists. This set them on the path of 'drawing attention to medical decisions that people make', enabling Susie and Liz 'to express the thought processes and emotions involved when patients make decisions about medical treatment.' ...

Susie Freeman's and Dr Liz Lee's work can be viewed at: Contemporary Applied Arts, 2 Percy Street, London W1P 9FA (enquiries call 020 7436 2344) and from 19 July - 27 August at Fact, Fantasy and Pharmacopoeia, MAC, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham B12 9QH (enquiries: 0121 440 3838). [fashionUK]

Prepare to Wear

04 Jul 03

Paris is abuzz with preparation for Haute Couture Week which kicks off on Monday. As international press, editors and high brow couture clients prepare to enjoy the bi-annual extravaganza of fashion supersights, from the likes of John Galliano at Dior, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Valentino and Julien Macdonald at Givenchy, some fashionistas are simply gearing up for a week of seriously glamorous parties.

First on the agenda is ex-Scherrer designer Ritu Beri, who will get everybody in the mood with a soiree on Sunday night to celebrate her autumn/winter collection. Next up, ex-Yves Saint Laurent muse Loulou de la Falaise is expecting 200 of her very closest friends and press pals to celebrate the jewellery range she designed to accompany the couture line that she launched in February. Wednesday night's highlight will be a glittering bash thrown by the Gucci-owned Boucheron label - expect a full Gucci turnout, including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. Finally, Paris' fashion governing body, the Chambre Syndicale, will host the final evening's gala which will see between 700-800 of the world's most fashionable players sipping the best Champagne and nibbling canapés in the gardens of the Sacretariat.
