Be Your Best in a Dress
Anne L. Fritz - Life & Beauty Weekly

A dress is easy and fast: Zip it up, slip on your shoes, and you are instantly pretty and put together. With so many different styles available these days, there’s at least one to flatter your specific body type, accentuating the positive and hiding the rest. Check out advice from fashion experts below and learn how to find the best dress for your body shape.

The DIY Blow-dry
Beth Janes - Life & Beauty Weekly

Most of us know what it’s like to leave a hair salon with bouncy, beautiful hair. Then later, when you wash your hair at home, you can’t quite recreate that salon effect with your own two hands and a blow-dryer. So, next time your wet hair is dying for styling, follow this step-by-step guide to a professional blow-dry at home

Gorgeous Hair: Getting Most from Conditioners
Bonnie Steele - The Style Glossy

Maintaining that healthy, manageable hair you get from hours at the salon requires work at home. So how can you keep that high shine? Conditioning your hair regularly will improve its strength, shine and keep hair damage to a minimum, though it can't actually repair damaged hair. Here's a conditioning guide for your hair type

Jewelry Trend: Big Statement on a Small Budget
Valli Herman - The Style Glossy

Jewelry and chocolate have a lot in common this season: You can't stop with just one piece. With many accessory collections featuring a strong vintage feel, now is the time to reassess that pile of forgotten chains, bangles or rhinestones cluttering your jewelry box. Don't go on a treasure hunt for the perfect piece: how you style and combine pieces is more important than any single item.

Day-to-night Chic in a Flash
Holly Crawford - The Style Glossy

When the time comes to go from work to wining and dining, all you'll need are a few key pieces to take your look from corporate to completely chic. Here's how

How to Be a Red Carpet Beauty
Shelley Levitt - The Style Glossy

As a judge on 'Dancing with the Stars,' Carrie Ann Inaba shrewdly assesses spins and steps. As host of TV Guide network's red carpet coverage for Hollywood's award shows, she chats up celebs about coiffures and couture. Between fittings and hair appointments, Inaba shares the ticktock of how she gets gorgeous big events.

Party Makeup in 3 Minutes or Less
Stephanie Tweito Jacob - Life & Beauty Weekly

Your schedule is packed enough as it is. But when you add the extra to-do's required before a party -- finding a baby sitter, buying a gift for the hostess, etc. -- things can get as hectic as Times Square on New Year's Eve. Who has time for makeup? Follow these steps to create a simple, pretty look in less time than it took to choose your outfit.

Beauty SOS
Emily Listfield - The Style Glossy

Whether you're heading out for a job interview or a big night on the town, the last thing you need is an unpleasant surprise in the mirror. We went to the makeup artists and hairstylists who get the biggest celebrities ready for their close-ups, and we asked for advice on how to deal with some of the most common beauty predicaments.

What to Wear Now: Floral Dresses

orange floraI need someone to get married this spring and invite me to their fabulous outdoor wedding because I've already picked out the dress (pictured, left). My favorite florals are oversized hothouse blooms or abstracts -- not much of a fan of the ditsy floral -- in pretty colors like orange or purple. The newest floral dresses come in trim shift silhouettes that let the print take center stage. (Photo Credit: Nordstrom.com)

Not Dressed Up, Somewhere to Go

nullYesterday, after a fun night out of town with my 7-year-old at a Taylor Swift concert (you've never seen so many skirts and cowboy boots in your life!) , I found myself facing a surprise business meeting with nothing more to wear than jeans and sneakers. And at 9 a.m.. the only store open was Target. I had less than an hour to put together something acceptable for a casual business meeting. Honestly, I haven't used Target for clothing other than workout clothes so I was surprised by some of the cute -- and cheap -- pieces I found. My jean jacket -- which I really like -- was just $24.99. The sheer shirt under it just $19.99. I bought earrings (2 pair), shoes, a bag (the world's cutest $14.99 bag with zipper treatments) and sunglasses. Honestly, can't say I loved the pants (I like a longer crop) or the shoes, but they were passable for the day and got me through the meeting. (Photo Credit: Angela M. Patterson)

What to Wear Now: Military Influences

army shirtdressHow many trends can go to work at the office (like the shirtdress, left) or be knockaround casual for weekend (as in utility pants) ? The military look gets its legs from olive and khaki canvas pieces; it mixes back well with earthy pieces like rope-heel espadrille or cork wedges and wood accessories. If all that olive drab and khaki isn't your speed, add color pops in orange, coral or yellow. (Photo Credit: Nordstrom.com)

Fashion's Biggest Night Leaves Me Feeling, Well, Underwhelmed

maggieSure, there were moments at the Oscars where an actress really got it right like Maggie Gyllenhaal in that spectacular hand-painted Dries van Noten strapless gown or Cameron Diaz in a strapless gold beaded Oscar de la Renta. But mostly, everything was just passable, like Sandra Bullock's match-to-Oscar-statute gold Marchesa or Jennifer Lopez' over-the-top Armani. There wasn't much terrible fashion -- even Mariah Carey got it right -- although Charlize Theron's strange bosom blunder left everyone laughing. I guess the bottom line is other than an overwhelming amount of gold, ruffles, messy updos (what was SJP thinking?) and front slits, Oscar fashion this year just left me feeling a little underwhelmed. Browse the Oscar dress gallery and judge for yourself. (Photo Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty Images)

Girls, Let Jessica Simpson Be a Lesson

So poor little Jessica Simpson is all over the news and on "Oprah" whining about how tough it is to hear comments about her looking fat in her mom jeans. It's not that I'm unsympathetic: I have body issues just like all of us do. My problem is with Jessica Simpson herself. She put herself out there as a pop tart and sex symbol. Every chance she got, she paraded around in low-cut, skimpy outfits and Daisy Dukes showing off her body to get noticed. She trained the public to notice her because of her looks. Then, when she packed on a few and people noticed, she got defensive. You know, Jess, most of us women make a living and get by with our brains, not our bodies. We may still have trouble with muffin tops and backfat, but because our co-workers, family and friends never saw us as a piece of meat in the first place, we deal with it. The lesson you can learn from Jessica Simpson? Don't try to get by on just your looks because it won't last and never, ever wear mom jeans.

10 Spring Trends You'll Love to Wear

jumpsuitI have set the scene: a tanned me, laughing poolside with a cocktail in hand, dressed in a breezy white strapless jumpsuit. Why yes, Rachel Zoe! This jumpsuit is 'to die'! I'll say. Does it matter that my warm weather reality is more like me dusty riding arena-side, sunburned with a farmer's tan, dressed in jeans and a t-shirt? Of course not, because fashion means a girl can always dream (and I'm still getting that jumpsuit.) I haven't planned scenarios for all this season's new looks yet -- like denim (I KNOW I'll have places to wear that) or plaid (again, works for everyone) -- but there really are 10 standout trends that we'll all love wearing this season. Countdown to Oscars: Valentino, The Last Emperor

"An evening dress that reveals a woman's ankles while she's walking is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen," reveals legendary couture designer Valentino in the movie "Valentino: The Last Emperor." The movie (I downloaded mine from Amazon.com for less than $5), details his extravagant lifestyle and collections before he retired from the business and is full of insights into the rarified world of haute couture.

Watching it right before the Oscars is great timing because the movie gives a peek into the the fantasy world that produces the red carpet gowns you'll be seeing next week. You may get the giggles from Valentino's snobbish take on everything (he sniffs at one venue because it has "rails" just like a Macys) but you have to remember he spent a lifetime creating a world filled with beauty (even his many dogs stay sparkling with staff to brush their teeth.) In Valentino's world every woman is beautiful and the dresses only enhance that.

Valentino may be retired, but his contemporaries -- Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld -- are still making these couture gowns. After his outstanding couture show at his 45 year retrospective in 2007, Lagerfeld whispers in his ear "Compared to us, the rest are making rags." After you see this film and Valentino's glorious designs over the years, you may be inclined to agree.

What to Wear Now: New Leggings

joes jeans leggingsMy basic black leggings have gotten me through another winter, but now I'm ready to try some new legging styles. Like a great pair of Joe's Jean's zip-ankle leggings in stone (light khaki) that I think would look great with a denim tunic or just about any color I put it with. I've also got my eye on a new pair of denim leggings that walk the line between jeans and leggings (which is why they are called jeggings.) (Photo Credit: Nordstrom.com)

Spring Trends to Love: Denim Dressing

tory burch denim wedgesIt's no secret I'm a huge denim fan. ralph lauren denim jacketAfter all, it's an incredibly durable and versatile fabric (besides jeans how many other pieces in your closet go with everything from leather to T-shirts?) This spring the fashion world spread the denim love around to so much more than just jeans: rompers, bags, shoes, jackets, dresses and tops all got a sprinkling of denim. While edgier types might go with the newest head-to-toe denim looks (layer a chambray shirt under a denim jacket and pair with jeans) the rest of us might want to just add a piece or two to freshen up our existing pieces. My two favorite looks here are the Tory Burch denim wedges (Love!) and the Ralph Lauren dark denim jacket (I would wear this forever.) Find your favorite denim looks for spring in my top 10 denim dressing list. (Photo Credits: Both, Nordstrom.com)

Fashion Week, Day 7: Goodbye, Bryant Park

Today is the last day of the tents in Bryant Park. Next season (September) we'll be moving to Lincoln Center and a whole new era of Fashion Week begins. Change is good, especially in fashion, but I have some great memories of the tents. After all, it's where I saw Anna Wintour trip (yes, she is human) on the cobblestones. The tents are also where I stood for hours with the sweaty throngs of photographers in "the pit" back when I had to take my own photos (I remember the first season when one veteran shooter marvelled at the .mpeg capability on my camera -- this goes way back!)

Fashion for fall also saw changes, with the jacket -- which was so popular the last few seasons -- being replaced by the vest. I happen to really love vests, mostly because they are so incredibly versatile. A fur vest can go with a slim pair of black pants to work or with slouchy jeans on the weekend. It's also easily wearable by women of all different sizes, shapes and lifestyles. (Photo Credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images )

Pills, Thrills and and Couture
08 Jul 03

Textile artist Susie Freeman and practising GP Dr Liz Lee, are an unlikely twosome for an artistic collaboration. More unusual is the work they create - clothes that seem fluffy and frivolous but actually draw attention to medical matters.

Susie Freeman and Liz Lee are old school friends and Susie explains how their collaboration developed: 'We chat like all women do. Liz was very interested in family planning, and wanted to raise awareness of contraceptive methods available.' Around the same time, a U.S. gallery which sold Susie's work, commissioned one of her textile garments decorated with pills. Susie hadn't made such a piece but the mistaken request sparked an idea - combine Susie's dramatic fabrics with Liz's medical objectives.

Their idea, which they called Inside Out, won them a Sci-Art Award in 1998 - a grants scheme sponsored by the Wellcome Trust encouraging collaborations between scientists and artists. This set them on the path of 'drawing attention to medical decisions that people make', enabling Susie and Liz 'to express the thought processes and emotions involved when patients make decisions about medical treatment.' ...

Susie Freeman's and Dr Liz Lee's work can be viewed at: Contemporary Applied Arts, 2 Percy Street, London W1P 9FA (enquiries call 020 7436 2344) and from 19 July - 27 August at Fact, Fantasy and Pharmacopoeia, MAC, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham B12 9QH (enquiries: 0121 440 3838). [fashionUK]

Prepare to Wear

04 Jul 03

Paris is abuzz with preparation for Haute Couture Week which kicks off on Monday. As international press, editors and high brow couture clients prepare to enjoy the bi-annual extravaganza of fashion supersights, from the likes of John Galliano at Dior, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Valentino and Julien Macdonald at Givenchy, some fashionistas are simply gearing up for a week of seriously glamorous parties.

First on the agenda is ex-Scherrer designer Ritu Beri, who will get everybody in the mood with a soiree on Sunday night to celebrate her autumn/winter collection. Next up, ex-Yves Saint Laurent muse Loulou de la Falaise is expecting 200 of her very closest friends and press pals to celebrate the jewellery range she designed to accompany the couture line that she launched in February. Wednesday night's highlight will be a glittering bash thrown by the Gucci-owned Boucheron label - expect a full Gucci turnout, including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. Finally, Paris' fashion governing body, the Chambre Syndicale, will host the final evening's gala which will see between 700-800 of the world's most fashionable players sipping the best Champagne and nibbling canapés in the gardens of the Sacretariat.
