Natasha Sunshine
Oscars, as they usually are, were an exciting hair moment. Every year, hairstylists wait with anticipation to see what fabulous styles will grace the red carpet and inspire our work for the next six months. This year did not disappoint.
There seemed to be a theme of more than just the standard up-style, chignon or Victoria's Secret waves. Instead, some of Hollywood's biggest stars went with a simple, beautiful haircut.
A well-done cut is to a stylist what a well-made building is to an architect. Here are three of my favorite looks that are destined to be highly requested for spring and summer.
Scarlett Johansson: The Uncontrived Bob
What to ask for:
A round-layered and textured bob
Who wears this well: Almost everyone
How to style it:
For wavy textures, add a little bit of your favorite product to towel-dried hair and let it air dry. Once dried, scrunch out any styling crunch and you're done. For straighter hair, blow dry.
Then, using a 1 1/2-inch curling iron, make sloppy candy-cane waves in all directions. What that means is roll one forward, one back, one up to the sky or any way you choose.
The key is to create an inconsistent curl pattern. Scrunch and go.
Michelle Williams: The Classic Pixie
What to ask for: Classic graduation with soft layers
Who wears this well: Those with an oval face shape and a long neck
How to style it:
Add your favorite shine product and wrap-dry.
Wrap-drying is when you brush the hair completely around the head to one side, then rotate and do the same in the opposite direction. You're basically using your head like a big roller to smooth down the hair.
Cate Blanchett: The Polished Bob
What to ask for: A low-graduated bob
Who wears this well: Those with a round or oval face shape
How to style it:
Blow-dry using an extra-large round brush and roll hair under; the larger the brush, the straighter the hair. On hair that's short, a big round brush will make the perfect soft bend.
