Madrid, Spain
U.S. Marines stationed in southern Spain have been alerted to move into Libya and help evacuate American personnel in case the unrest in the North African country worsens.
A senior military official also said the Marines could be moved to a place closer to Libya so they can be deployed faster or within three hours from notification.
The Marines numbering 500 were deployed to Spain in recent weeks to respond to new terrorist attack on U.S. diplomatic posts in Libya. The deployment was an offshoot of last year's Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens.
During the attack, U.S. diplomats from the embassy in Tripoli called for military support but this was denied because troops in Europe could not get to Libya on time due to the distance.
With the stationing of the Marines in southern Spain, they can be quickly flown to Libya on a V-22 aircraft.
New unrest has transpired in Libya with militias besieging the foreign and justice ministry buildings in Tripoli late last month demanding that no officials from the ousted Gaddafi regime be allowed to hold office in the new government. The siege has ended, Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani said.

Madrid, Spain
Spanish lender Bankia reported its first profit after a catastrophic year in 2012 where the nationalized bank posted record losses and received financial assistance from the government.
The company said it generated 72mn euros in net profits for the first three months of the year. Net interest income, which accounts for the bank's income from its core lending activities, dropped to 512mn euros in this year's first quarter from last year's 844mn euros.
The latest result marks the company's first quarterly earnings after the Spanish government infused 15.5bn euros of fresh capital to the bank.
The government owns majority of the bank after receiving the bailout money funded by the EU. Last year's losses were the biggest in Spain's corporate history.
Under the terms of the government bailout, Bankia was forced to make a drastic contraction of its balance sheet and trading activity. The government also demanded that the bank shut down 1,100 branches across the country, representing more than a third of its total number of branches.
In the latest quarter, the bank said that it had closed 197 branches all over the country.
Following the collapse of the country's property market in 2008, where most of the Spanish banks had huge investments, the financial sector is still trying to recover.
The Spanish economy is still in recession and it has the EU's highest unemployment rate at 27 per cent.
