NFL 2002 Thanksgiving Weekend
Plus Bucs - Saints Sunday Night & Jets - Raiders MNF
NFL FACTOID: EMMITT’S FAVORITE THANKSGIVING GAME
He’s played in 12 of them, but ask all-time NFL rushing leader EMMITT SMITH of the Dallas Cowboys which is his favorite Thanksgiving Day game and he cites his first as a rookie in 1990 against Washington "when I knocked down DARRELL GREEN going into the end zone" (on one of his two rushing touchdowns of the day, November 22 in a 27-17 Dallas win).
Now a 13-year veteran, Smith will once again meet up this Thursday with Green, a 20-year veteran who is the oldest cornerback (42) ever to play in the NFL.
First comes the turkey, then come the tiebreakers. Which means that the NFL -- if that’s possible this year – is about to get even crazier. "It’s a five-game season," says St. Louis Rams wide receiver TORRY HOLT. And that "season" begins early this week with "Thanksgiving Classics."
That festive theme will be featured throughout Week 13 in everything from classic uniforms worn by the four teams that play on Thanksgiving Day, to on-field logos, to "Thanksgiving Classics" game balls and advertising. It all begins with the traditional "family and football" games this Thursday in Detroit and Dallas. The lineup and era of classic uniforms that will be worn:
THANKSGIVING CLASSICS

New England Patriots (1985) at Detroit Lions (1934-61) |

Once the last second helping is served, the NFL will sit back and wait for Sunday, December 1 – the coldest month of the NFL year in more ways than one.
"Every game in December is a playoff game," says Miami Dolphins defensive end JASON TAYLOR. With the tightness of this year’s races, he couldn’t be more right.
In only one division – the NFC North – do more than two games separate the leader from the second-, third-, or fourth-place team. That’s 21 teams all told in that category. In the NFC North, the Green Bay Packers (8-3) have a five-game lead, and can become the first 2002 playoff team and clinch the division title with a win or tie this Sunday against Chicago.
The other divisions? It’s bedlam!
AFC East:
Three clubs (7-4 Miami and 6-5 New York and New England) are within a game of each other. AFC North: Cleveland (6-5) is a half-game behind Pittsburgh (6-4-1). AFC South: Indianapolis (7-4) leads by a game over Tennessee (6-5). AFC West: The typical dogfight. Three teams are tied at the top -- 7-4 Denver, Oakland and San Diego. And the Broncos and Chargers meet this week.
NFC East
The 6-5 Giants are two games behind Philadelphia (8-3). NFC South: Two games separate 9-2 Tampa Bay, 7-3-1 Atlanta and 7-4 New Orleans. And the Bucs and Saints collide Sunday night. NFC West: San Francisco’s loss Monday night gives them only a two-game cushion (7-4 to 5-6) over St. Louis. The two meet in St. Louis in the final Monday night game of the season on December 30.
In an AFC matchup in San Diego this week, it’s two first-place teams that have been going through some rocky times recently while their co-holder -- the Oakland Raiders (see below) have won three in a row. Time to straighten things out for the San Diego Chargers (lost three of their past four) and Denver Broncos (lost two of their past three).
"This game means a lot as far as the playoff picture is concerned," says Broncos quarterback BRIAN GRIESE, who missed the team’s defeat (knee) by Indianapolis Sunday night, but will try to return for San Diego.
The Broncos would like to duplicate their performance of Week 5 when they handed the 4-0 Chargers their first defeat of the season (26-9). Their game plan that day: Stop LaDainian, Run Clinton. Denver clogged the running lanes of San Diego running back LA DAINIAN TOMLINSON – with 1,098 yards through Week 12, the first RB in Chargers history with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons – and held him to 48 yards. That forced San Diego to go to the air almost exclusively in the second half. They threw 33 times in the half, and ran only once. Meanwhile, Broncos rookie RB CLINTON PORTIS was getting the yards Tomlinson wasn’t. The team’s second-round draft choice from Miami carried 20 times for 102 yards. He is now the NFL’s leading rookie rusher with 836 yards, and averages almost five yards per carry (4.9), ranking him among the top five rookies in the category since 1990:

There’s a similar matchup that will take place in New York this week when the Giants meet the Tennessee Titans. Both teams come off losses after winning streaks – the Giants after three in a row, the Titans after five in a row.
And both know this is no time for bad patches.
"I don’t often talk about playoffs, but I did use the playoff scenario as a way of indicating to our team how precious each and every week is," says Titans head coach JEFF FISHER in recounting his talk to his team after its Week 12 loss to Baltimore. "Before the kickoff, if the playoffs were to start, we would have had a home playoff game. By Sunday night (with Indianapolis’ overtime win), we would not be in the playoffs.
"It shows you how the race is shaping up, and it shows you how important it is to play well each and every week."
The Titans’ defense will have to do exactly that this week because they will be facing an all-purpose back – TIKI BARBER – who is the NFC’s scrimmage-yards leader with 1,335 (882 rushing, 453 receiving). The star with his identical twin brother RONDE (of Tampa Bay) of those Visa TV commercials comes off a 146 rushing-yard, one-TD game against Houston, is the NFC’s fourth-leading rusher, and is on target to post his second 1,000-yard season in the past three years.
The Giants will face a similar ground threat in the Titans’ EDDIE GEORGE, who can make team history this week. With four rushing yards, George (8,571) will pass Pro Football Hall of Famer EARL CAMPBELL (8,574) for the franchise leadership in the category.
How impressed is the 47-year-old Campbell with George? He asked him for an autographed jersey last year. "I don’t have anyone’s jersey," says Campbell, "but I wanted Eddie George’s."
Sunday night (ESPN, 8:30 PM ET) will wrap up "Thanksgiving Classics" Week (that began on Monday when the San Francisco 49ers wore their 1980s uniforms). The New Orleans Saints will sport uniforms from 1967, their first year, when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in an NFC South clash. The Saints (7-4) sit two games behind the Buccaneers – the team with the best record in the NFL at 9-2. In between the two are the 7-3-1 Atlanta Falcons.
It figures to be a rollicking matchup of offense against defense. The Saints, with quarterback AARON BROOKS in command (No. 3 in the league in TD passes, 21), are second in the NFL (behind Oakland, 328) in points scored (322). That offense will confront the league’s stingiest defense that has surrendered only 126 points, or 11.5 per game. Something’s got to give, right Warren?
"They pretty much handled us the first week of the season," says Bucs defensive tackle WARREN SAPP of the Saints’ 26-20 overtime victory in Week 1 in which Tampa Bay had to score 10 points in the last three minutes of regulation to tie the game. "What we did last week was put the pedal to the metal and lap Green Bay (defeated by the Bucs in Week 12, 21-7). Now we’ll go to New Orleans and see if we can lap them. Believe me, we realize what’s ahead of us."
What’s immediately ahead of the Bucs are the NFC’s top rusher, the Saints’ DEUCE MC ALLISTER (950 yards), and the conference’s No. 3 receiving-yards leader, JOE HORN (952 yards). McAllister (knee) was a "did not play" in the Saints’ 24-15 loss to Cleveland last week. Horn was held to 47 yards on three catches. "You have to play at a high level against Tampa Bay," says New Orleans head coach JIM HASLETT. "You have to play mistake-free. You can’t give them anything cheap. For us to go out and win this game, we’ve got to do those things." And why not conclude the Thanksgiving weekend with a classic matchup – the New York Jets, for the fifth time in four years, at the Oakland Raiders (ABC-TV, 9:00 PM ET). And will the "Raider Nation" be roaring!
These two teams go back to the old AFL days. And what days they were! BEN DAVIDSON vs. JOE NAMATH. The "Heidi Game." The ’68 AFL Championship Game. These guys go way back! And until the final regular-season game of last year, the Raiders had beaten the Jets 11 out of 12 times in California since 1963 when the New York Titans became the Jets. The win this January 6 came on a 53-yard JOHN HALL field goal with 59 seconds left to give the Jets only their second Raiders road win in almost 40 years – and required them to double back the next week for a Wild Card playoff game. That one turned into the "JERRY RICE Show" as the NFL’s all-time leading receiver became the oldest player (39) in NFL history to catch a postseason TD pass while posting nine catches for 183 yards in a 38-24 Raiders win.
So this Monday night, it’s back again for the Jets to the "Black Hole," but are they worried? Not in the least, says fullback RICHIE ANDERSON. "We’re very confident," he says. "We know Oakland is a good football team, but right now, we’re playing good football. I wouldn’t expect we’d have any less confidence going there. We’ve been there before. We know how to play there." With all the key players on the field Monday night – Raiders receivers Rice and TIM BROWN and the Jets’ LAVERANUES COLES and WAYNE CHREBET, and running backs CHARLIE GARNER of the Raiders and CURTIS MARTIN of the Jets – the focal point of the game will be on the two quarterbacks.
One – RICH GANNON (36) of the Raiders – is 10 years older than the other – CHAD PENNINGTON (26) of the Jets. But what a year each is putting up! Since Week 5, when the three-year veteran Pennington became the Jets’ starter, he has taken the team to the AFC’s hottest streak (four wins in a row) and five victories in his first seven career starts. He and Gannon rank first (99.8) and second (99.1), respectively, in AFC passer rating. And his 108.8 rating in his first seven starts ranks right up there with some of the greats. "Even when we were 2-5, it was ‘Why not us? Why can’t we make history?’" says Pennington. "Now that we’re 6-5, it’s ‘Why not us? Why can’t we finish it off and make the playoffs?’"
If Pennington is showing veteran wiles, the 15-year veteran Gannon is exhibiting the exuberance of youth (Gannon NFL Conference Call: Wednesday, November 27, 3:00 PM ET, 630-395-0029, Passcode: NFL). He has taken the Raiders to the league’s No. 1 offensive and passer ratings, and ranks first in the AFC in attempts, completions and yards. And with two more 300-yard passing games, he will set the NFL season record with 10.
