Queen of Scots: Yani Tseng Wins British Title
Tom Edrington
Carnoustie, Scotland, United Kingdom
Call her Yani, Queen of Scots.
Yani Tseng won her fifth major championship at Scotland's Carnoustie links as she came from two shots back and easily won the women's British Open by four strokes.
Tseng started the day two behind third round leader Caroline Masson of Germany in a classic David vs. Goliath matchup but on this cloudy day, Goliath thrashed David, easily.
The round started with a bogey for Tseng and she trailed Masson by three, then Tseng got going and Masson's nerves and inexperience showed as her shakey putter led to a front nine of 39 and after a pair of birdies, Tseng was in control.
The world's No. 1 had few problems on her day. Her only testy two holes were the 12th and 13th. She missed the green at the par four 12th, failed to get up and down then at the par three 13th, her tee shot hit the pin and rolled well of the green left, leaving her a difficult pitch that led to another bogey.
But that was it, as far as trouble for Tseng.
Tseng easily reached the par five 14th in two for an tap-in birdie, reached the par five 17th easily for another birdie then hit a wedge into the 18th within three feet for an exclamation birdie and a 69 on the round and a 16-under par 272 total.
Masson got her only birdies of the day on the final two holes and that salvaged for her a fifth place tie with Catriona Matthew of Scotland at nine-under par.
The fallout from Masson's 78 allowed American Brittany Lang to jump up into the runnerup spot with a final round of 67 and a 12-under par total of 276.
Sweden's Sophie Gustafson was solo third at 11-under followed by Amy Yang at 10-under.
This day was the coronation of Tseng, who successfully defended the title she won last year at Royal Birkdale. It was her 17th world-wide win, her seventh this year. She is the youngest player ever to win five majors and this is her second of the season.
