The New York Giants have given permission to the agent of Osi Umenyiora to work out a trade for the defensive end.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Umenyiora wants to rework a contract that will pay him just over $7 million over the next two seasons.

The Giants have refused and have given Umenyiora's agents permission to work out a trade.

Part of Umenyiora's argument is the case of Charles Johnson.

The Carolina Panthers recently gave the five-year veteran a six-year, $72 million contract with $21 million in guaranteed money. Johnson also had 11 1/2 sacks last season.

Umenyiora reported to camp Saturday and underwent his physical Sunday.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Umenyiora was scheduled to visit with team doctor Russell Warren to get clearance to practice since Umenyiora has had issues with his hip. Umenyiora watched practice from the sideline Sunday night.

The 29-year-old tied for the team lead with 11 1/2 sacks and had a league-high 10 forced fumbles last season.

Last season, 29-year-old Umenyiora started all 16 games despite playing through pain and dealing with an injured hip. He led the league with 10 forced fumbles and also tied Justin Tuck for the team lead with his 11 1/2 sacks in 2010.

Umenyiora been the heart and soul of the Giants defense, especially this past season, when he was recognized with his second All-Pro selection. Umenyiora, was a key component in the Giants Super Bowl XLII victory over the New England Patriots
