Mountain View, CA

Popular web browser Mozilla Firefox is beefing up its technology to increase the speed of its JavaScript with a technology called IonMonkey.

JavaScript is the programming language used by web browsers today. It is also the programming language used by social media website Facebook and search giant Google.

With so many web browsers to choose from, it's important for developers to improve the performance of their products. Mozilla Firefox faces stiff competition from Google's Chrome browser and Apple's Safari browser.

Developers can access the use of IonMonkey since it's included in Firefox 18 Nightly package. The beta version will be available sometime in the first quarter of next year.

IonMonkey increases the speed of Firefox by using a process called compiling a program.

According to Mozilla's official blog, the process has three steps. The first step involves the translation of JavaScript to an intermediate representation (IR). Then it runs various algorithms to optimize the IR. The final step features the translation of the final IR to machine code.

In benchmark tests conducted by Mozilla; Firefox 15 grabbed a score of 8474, and Firefox 17 finished with a score of 9511. Firefox 18 had a score of 10188 and with the new IonMonkey technology, is 7 percent faster than Firefox 17 and 20 percent faster than Firefox 15.

In previous versions of Firefox, Mozilla used technologies called JaegerMonkey and TraceMonkey.
