Dayton, OH
Four McGlynn scored 18 points off the bench to lead Vermont's balanced offensive attack against Lamar Cardinals, 71-59 in an NCAA tournament first-round duel at the University of Dayton Arena.
Behind McGlynn, Sandro Carissimo (10 points) and Brian Voelkel (12 rebounds and 7 assists), the Catamounts earned their second win in NCAA tournament history and a date with top-seed North Carolina Friday.
Coming off a title-winning performance in the America East Tournament, Vermont showed it belongs in the NCAA tourney by showcased steady perimeter shooting and solid rebounding to control the ballgame.
After building a 30-21 lead at the break, the Catamounts continued to find success from the perimeter and the charity stripe, where they knocked down 17 of their 24 free-throws.
Devon Lamb and Mike James led the way for the Cardinals with 16 points each, while Anthony Miles added 14 in the losing effort. Stan Brown grabbed 13 rebounds but could not get much frontline help from his teammates against Vermont's athletic big-men.
Vermont made its fifth NCAA tourney appearance in 10 years, but nothing bigger in school's history than the feat they accomplished in 2005, when the 13th-seeded Catamounts stunned 5th-seeded Syracuse in the first-round.
On Friday, the Catamounts aim to become the first 16th-seeded team in the history of the NCAA tourney to beat the top-seed as they take on the star-studded Tar Heels.
