Thiago Alcantara is set to sign a four-year deal with European champions Bayern Munich, shunning an offer from Manchester United.
The 22-year old Spaniard was said to have provisionally agreed on a five-year contract a £17million deal with Manchester.
Pep Guardiola, who oversaw Alcantara's development when in charge at Barcelona, described Thiago as "a super, super player" who "can play in three, four or five positions."
Thiago recently led the Spain Under-21 team to the Euro 2013 title and scored a hat-trick in the final against Italy.
The news would be a blow for Manchester United manager David Moyes who had hoped to use Thiago to bolster their midfield after Paul Scholes retired.
Moyes conducted the first training session of United's three-week pre-season tour in Bangkok on Thursday behind closed doors.
