Abercrombie profit edges up on sales increase
Teen retailer Abercrombie & Fitch said Friday that its first-quarter earnings rose 3 percent from a year ago on stronger sales. Abercrombie said it earned $62.1 million, or 69 cents per share, in the three months ended May 3 compared with profits of $60.1 million, or 65 cents a share, a year ago. Sales rose 8 percent to $800.1 million from $742.4 million last year. But sales at stores open at least a year, considered a key indicator of a retailer's strength, fell 3 percent in the quarter. JC Penney 1Q Profit Falls 50%
"Our financial performance in the first quarter was clearly impacted by the weakened consumer environment" Department store retailer J.C. Penney says a pullback in consumer spending has cut its first-quarter profit in half, and predicts "difficult" conditions for the entire year. Plano-based J.C. Penney Co. says net income dropped to $120 million, or 54 cents per share, from $238 million, or $1.04 per share, a year ago. Total sales fell 5 percent to $4.13 billion from $4.35 billion. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected profit of 50 cents per share on slightly higher revenue of $4.17 billion. Read more

Francis Bacon Art Could Go For $70M At NYC Auction
A three-panel masterpiece by Francis Bacon is going on sale in Manhattan. It could fetch $70 million, which would be a record for the British artist. Francis Bacon's "Triptych, 1976" (TRIP'-tik 1976) is being offered Wednesday night at Sotheby's auction house. Another work -- Mark Rothko's "Orange, Red, Yellow" -- could bring $30 million to $40 million at the same auction. On Tuesday night, a 1952 Rothko painting called "No. 15" sold at Christie's for $50.4 million. Bacon's triptych has been owned by the same collector for more than 30 years.
