Bronx, NY
Instead of the marquee pitching duel of CC Sabathia and Justin Verlander, new faces emerged with Robinson Cano shining with a grand slam and Ivan Nova stepping up in relief of Sabathia in the New York Yankees' 9-3 win over the Detroit Tigers as the suspended Game 1 of the ALDS resumed Saturday night.
The teams began play Friday, but rain wiped out aces Verlander and Sabathia after only 1 1-2 innings. The game was tied at 1-1.
It resumed Saturday in the bottom of the second with two new pitchers on the mound and the Yankees 28-year-old All-Star slugger Cano starring in the victory.
Cano, who shattered a 1-1 tie in the fifth, hit the Yankees' first postseason grand slam in nearly 12 years. He also drove in six runs in support of rookie Nova's 6 1-3 sterling innings.
Cano's towering 375 feet blast to right field highlighted New York's six-run sixth inning.
In the eighth, Cano, the 2011 Home Run Derby winner, added an RBI double to make it 9-1.
Nova (1-0), who was a major revelation considering he spent some time in the minors this season, allowed two runs on four hits over 6 1-3 innings. He also struck five and issued four walks in the win.
Doug Fister (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over 4 2-3 innings.
Sunday's Game 2 will pit Yankees' Freddy Garcia against Detroit's Max Scherzer.
