Baton Rouge, LA
Sophomore cornerback Tyrann Mathieu scored on a 92-yard punt return to ignite the top-ranked LSU Tigers past the upset-minded Arkansas Razorbacks, 41-17 Friday at Tiger Stadium.
LSU overcame an early 14-0 deficit as the Tigers came up with three quick touchdowns in the winding minutes of the first half and went on to preserve their immaculate record this season.
Mathieu, who has been sensational defensively for LSU this season, electrified the Tigers by scoring on a 92-yard punt return to level the game at 14-14.
Senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson gave LSU the lead before the break after hooking up with junior wideout Russell Shepard for a 9-yard TD pass.
The Razorbacks drew first blood in the second half on 28-yard field goal conversion by Zach Hocker, but the Tigers offensive juggernaut kept on rolling with running back Spencer Ware and Jefferson scoring on the ground.
Jefferson threw 18-for-29 yards for 208 yards with one TD and an interception, while freshman running back Kevin Hillard rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.
Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson went 14-for-22 for 207 yards and came up with a 13-yard TD pass to wideout Jarius Wright in the 14:54 mark of the second quarter.
With the victory, LSU (12-0, 8-0 SEC) clinched Western Division title and will only have to beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game to secure a spot in the BCS National Championship.
