Chicago, IL
The Chicago Cubs continus their search for their next manager with Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. becoming the latest aspirant to interview with team officials, multiple sources reported Thursday.
Alomar, who's the son of ex-MLB player Sandy Alomar and the brother of baseball great Roberto Alomar, will be meeting Cubs officials Friday in his attempt to become the next manager of the ballclub.
Alomar, former AL Rookie of the Year winner and six-time All-Star, hit .272 with 112 home runs and 522 RBI over his 19-season MLB career. He was also a solid player behind the plate, winning the Gold Glove award in his rookie year.
After retiring in 2007, Alomar landed his first coaching gig with the New York Mets as a catching instructor in 2008.
He then rejoined the Tribe coaching staff as their first base coach in 2010 and 2011 and then became a bench coach for manager Manny Acta in 2012.
Many baseball followers believe Alomar has the capacity to manage a team considering his leadership and communication skills.
Alomar is fluent in Spanish and English, allowing him to bond with teammates during his playing career.
In 2010, Alomar also interviewed for the Toronto Blue Jays manager position though the club opted to hire John Farrell.
