Allen Craig's run-scoring single in the sixth inning stood up, as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Texas Rangers 3-2 Wednesday night in the opening game of the World Series.

Chris Carpenter pitched solidly for the Cards, then five St. Louis relievers blanked the Rangers the rest of the way, including Jason Motte who retired the side in order in the ninth.

Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter tossed six innings of five-hit, two-run ball for the win. He fanned four batters and walked just one.

Rangers starter C.J. Wilson was fortunate to allow just three runs over 5 2-3 frames as he walked six batters and gave up four hits. He took the loss.

Mike Napoli provided the Rangers offense with a two-run homer in the fifth that knotted the score at 2-2.

The Cards forged a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Lance Berkman's two-run single.

Ian Kinsler and Adrian Beltre each had two hits for the Rangers, while Albert Pujols walked and scored a run for the Cards.
