Detroit - Who's Your Tiger
Mitch Albom
In the last 18 months, the auto industry has become something bigger than just the buying and selling of cars. It has become an ideological ground zero, a tug of war with many hands on the rope, labor, manufacturing, nationalism, elitism, environmentalism, jobs, the survival of a shrinking but vital American city: Detroit

The weekend is almost here in Detroit, which means it's time to make plans. Detroit and Hockey: A Love Story?
As a Detroiter, the popularity and consistent performance of the Red Wings led me to believe that hockey as a sport was a national favorite. Of course, if the level of the Lion's recent success predicted the popularity of football, the sport should be barely a blip on the radar. Detroit and Hockey: A Love Story? originally appeared on About.com Detroit on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at 08:57:53.
As it turns out, hockey ranks 6th nationally. According to a Harris Poll from January, 2010, hockey ranks behind pro and college football, baseball, basketball and auto racing. In fact, in 2009, it tied with golf. Worse yet for the future of the sport, a 2007 ESPN Sports Poll ranked hockey 12th among children, behind soccer and pro wrestling.

Michigan Well Being
According to Forbes, Detroit ranks as the 4th most miserable city in the nation. That being said, apparently things are starting to look up for the state; Michigan's well-being index actually increased from 2008 to 2009. Okay, times are still tough in Michigan, but apparently adversity breeds success because athletes with ties to Michigan helped the U.S. earn four of its 37 Winter Olympic medals. Heck, Michigan athletes helped Canada and Finland earn some medals, too. More Information: Michigan Well Being originally appeared on About.com Detroit on Monday, March 1st, 2010 at 13:25:33.
Canton, Michigan: Olympic Ice Dancing Gold and Silver
The real winners in Olympic Ice Dancing may be Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, the team that coached/choreographed both the gold-medalist and silver-medalist pairs at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. While both ice-dancing pairs train at Arctic Edge in Canton, MI., Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir skate for Canada, and Meryl Davis and Charlie White skate for the United States. As it turns out, Igor Shpilband, a former Russian ice dancer himself, has been coaching ice-dancing pairs to prominence since 1990, when he defected from the Soviet Union. Over the years, he's coached pairs from Russia, Bulgaria, Canada and the United States. Sometime in 2001-2002, he teamed up with Marina Zoueva (sometimes spelled Zueva), who skated for Russia with partner Andrew Vitman at the 1977 World Championships and came in 5th. She later coached and choreographed for Russia until she came to the United States in 1991. Together, Shpilband and Zoueva moved to the newly formed Arctic Figure Skating Club in 2003 and worked to develop the club's ice-dancing into an elite program.

For the Spartans, not winning the Big Ten tourney wouldn't be all bad
INDIANAPOLIS — We'll see if Tom Izzo's talk of wanting to win the Big Ten Tournament is just that — talk — or if the desire is truly genuine.
Not only has Michigan State not won a conference tournament title in 10 years, the Spartans haven't even advanced to the championship game. Izzo might not care much about the tournament, but he'd like his team to win one every four years or so.
Just once in the past few years has Izzo expressed a strong desire to win the tournament for its own sake, and that was in 2008. It was Drew Neitzel's senior season, and Izzo wanted him to leave MSU having contributed to some type of Big Ten championship. Because it didn't happen during the regular season in Neitzel's four years, the conference tournament was his last chance.
That desire was part of the reason why Izzo shed tears when the Spartans lost to Wisconsin, 65-63, in the 2008 semifinals — the rivalry with Badgers' head coach Bo Ryan and some unusual foul calls notwithstanding.
In general, though, there have been two sides to the Big Ten Tournament debate for MSU.
In the first 12 years of the tournament, MSU is 13-10. MSU has earned a bye into the quarterfinals in all but one conference tournament (2006), meaning that the Spartans played no more than two extra games between the end of the regular season and the start of the NCAA Tournament.
This line of thought says that going home early and getting extra rest, instead of staying on the road and preparing for a Big Ten Tournament final, could be seen as a bonus.
However, when MSU won the Big Ten Tournament title in 1999 and 2000, the Spartans also advanced to Final Fours. In 1999, MSU was 15-1 in the Big Ten and compiled a 22-game winning streak between Jan. 9 and a March 27 loss in the Final Four to Duke.
The 2000 team was 13-3 in conference play and won its last 11 games to win the NCAA Championship.
