Forward Marchand Agrees to Four-year Extension with Bruins

The Boston Bruins have signed forward Brad Marchand to a four-year contract extension worth $4.5 million annually, keeping him through the 2016-17 season.
"I just want to thank the Jacobs family and the Bruins organization for allowing me the opportunity to be part of the team for this year and four more years," Marchand said. "It's an honor to be a part of this organization and I'm very excited for what the future may hold for the Bruins."
Aside from Marchand, the Bruins have also signed other key players to contract extension, including Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, Chris Kelly and Tuukka Rask.
"With the group of guys we have, with the opportunity we have ahead of us, we have such a great team, and we're going to be a very strong team for years to come, and I think we have the opportunity here to do some very good things and especially make a couple of good runs at the Cup," Marchand said.
A third round pick of the Bruins in 2006, the 24-year-old Marchand is fresh from his second full NHL season with the team. Last season, the 5-foot-9, 183-pound forward enjoyed career highs in goals (28), assists (27) and points (55), along with 87 penalty minutes in 76 games.
Marchand's 28 goals ranked second on the Bruins, behind Tyler Seguin's 29, and his plus-31 rating ranked fifth in the league.
In his first full season with Boston in 2010-11, Marchand appeared in 77 games, tallying 41 points (21 goals, 20 assists) and 51 penalty minutes, finishing the season tied for third in the league with five shorthanded goals and recorded the second highest plus/minus rating among NHL rookies with a plus-25.
Marchand's outstanding play earned him Boston's "7th Player Award," as voted by the fans, which is presented to the Bruin who went above and beyond the call of duty and exceeded the expectations of Bruins fans during the regular season.
The forward went on to rank second overall in postseason scoring -- first among rookies -- with 11 goals in 25 games and added eight assists en route to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship. He also recorded a rookie-best plus-12 rating, and he scored two goals in the Cup-clinching victory against the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7.
In 173 NHL games, all with Boston, Marchand has 49 goals, 48 assists and 158 penalty minutes with a plus-53 rating, as well as 12 goals and nine assists in 32 playoff contests.
