Food Friendly City: Portland, Oregon
World's Fare By Marguerite Thomas
On the western edge of Oregon where the Willamette and Columbia rivers meet, lies Portland, Oregon, one of North America's finest epicurean destinations.
I'm not just talking about expensive gourmet restaurants, although there is no lack of these here too.
What I am referring to is the kind of genuine food culture that may be a way of life in other countries (France & Italy come to mind), but is less common in the US.

Two Easy Ways to Donate to the Oregon Food Bank
With spring cleaning just around the corner, now's the right time to be thinking about finding new homes for the many things we own but don't use. How about the perfectly good canned food that's not getting used in your pantry? The Oregon Food Bank will gladly accept a box of canned goods. Drop them off at 7900 NE 33rd Avenue in Portland.
Want to make a larger contribution? The Oregon Food Bank is one of the many worthy causes that accepts vehicle donations. Your donation will help people in need, and you'll receive a tax credit. SE Tool Lending Library
There are already successful tool lending libraries in NE and North Portland, and now the same concept is coming to SE, hopefully by early May. It works just like a traditional library: you borrow something and return it by a specific date to avoid late fees. There are no membership fees. Since tool prices are so high and many of us only need them occasionally, it's a genius idea. The SE tool library is currently seeking tool donations and volunteers. If you're interested, contact Steve Couche at 503.232.0699 or visit the SE Portland Tool Library online
Anyone who lives north of the city of Milwaukie, south of I-84, east of the Willamette River and west of 82nd Avenue can borrow up to five tools at a time for a one-week period free of charge. DIY workshops are also in the works. SE Tool Lending Library originally appeared on About.com Portland, OR on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 at 00:48:03.
