San Jose, CA
The San Jose State Spartans overcame six turnovers, including five in the second half, and scored the game-winning points courtesy of Matt Faulkner’s last-minute TD pass to Chandler Jones to claim a thrilling 28-27 victory over the Hawaii Warriors Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
Trailing 27-22 down the stretch, the Spartans launched a late comeback with Faulkner throwing a 37-yard TD pass to Jones with 36 seconds left in regulation.
It marked the first home triumph for the Spartans against Hawaii since 1997.
Jones also ran for a 20-yard TD and returned a fumble 23 yards for a score to help hike the Spartans lead to 20-7 at halftime.
San Jose faced a 7-0 deficit in the first half after a strong start from Hawaii.
Faulkner connected on 27-of-41 passes for 366 yards with one TD and three interceptions for the Spartans (3-4, 2-1), who were coming off a road loss to BYU last Saturday that ended their brief two-game win-streak.
Hawaii (3-3, 1-1 WAC), trying to extend a two-game winning streak, including a win in its league play opener against Louisiana Tech in Ruston, also had a six-turnover night.
Warriors quarterback Bryant Moniz threw for 303 yards, but had three interceptions in the loss.
