According to multiple reports the Big 12 Conference has told West Virginia it will be accepted into the conference pending formal approval.
Numerous media reports said that West Virginia was prepared to leave the floundering Big East Conference for the suddenly stable Big 12.
West Virginia will be accepted into the conference as a replacement for Missouri, which the conference believes is leaving for the SEC. According to various reports, West Virginia's acceptance into the Big 12 is not tied to Missouri leaving.
West Virginia is attractive because is has a solid football program and its men's basketball program has reached the NCAA tournament six of the past seven years.
Depsite the invitation to West Virginia, the Big 12 is not giving up on Missouri. At its board of directors meeting Monday, the conference urged Missouri to stay and Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton did not inform the conference that Missouri intended to leave.
Neither conference would confirm Monday that West Virginia was moving from the Big East to the Big 12.
"Contrary to media reports, there is no press conference scheduled for Wednesday concerning WVU's athletic conference affiliation. There are no further comments at this time," West Virginia school officials said in a release.
