Damascus, Syria

Bahrain and Kuwait recalled their ambassadors to Syria as Syrian security forces continue a deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters in the eastern city of Deir al-Zour.

The recall followed Saudi Arabia's withdrawal of its ambassador in Damascus, when security forces backed by government tanks attacked Deir al-Zour killing 50 people.

Kuwait's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad al-Sabah said the bloodshed in Syria is unacceptable while Bahrain's Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmad al-Khalifa said Damascus must "resort to reason."

The ongoing military assault on Deir al-Zour killed a mother and her two children who were fleeing the city's Huweika district on Monday. Another woman was killed in Al-Jura district.

The reports coming from residents and human rights activists could not be independently verified as international journalists are restricted from covering military operations in the country.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said the assault was targeting outlaws and terrorists to protect civilians. The military denied reports that tanks shelled the city.
