The WTA has suspended the head of the Russian Tennis Federation for making 'sexist' remarks about Venus and Serena Williams.
Shamil Tarpischev made comments about the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, during a television appearance that were widely considered to be sexist and racist. Specifically, he referred to the sisters as the "Williams brothers" and made comments about their physical appearance.
As a result of these comments, Tarpischev was fined $25,000 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and was also suspended from any involvement in WTA or ITF events for a year. The comments were widely criticized by many players and officials within the tennis community, and Tarpischev issued an apology for his remarks.
