The Michigan Wolverines have been trying to get more than just quarterback Denard Robinson to make key contributions to the offense.

They might have found their No. 2 guy in Vincent Smith.

Robinson passed for two touchdowns and gained 198 yards and ran for another to lead Michigan to a 31-3 victory over Eastern Michigan Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

Smith, on just nine carries, gained 118 yards to supplement Robinson's efforts.

"Vince (Smith) really had a nice day for us. I thought he had good reads and had good vision" said Michigan coach Brady Hoke.

"However many carries I need to will my team to win — that's how many carries I can handle," Smith said. "It's all about the team. Whenever we needed a jump or a running back to step up when the game is not going well, I guess we feel it's like, 'Whatever for the team.' Somebody is going to have to step up and get the job done."

"When he starts running well, (the defense) starts crashing down on him," Robinson said.

"Speaking on behalf of the offensive line, Vince is one of those guys you see every day who's not scared at all to put his face on," said offensive guard Patrick Omameh. "He's just a gritty guy who likes to do the dirty work, which you don't always see in (someone) who is primarily in a touchdown-scoring position."

Michigan is 3-0 while Eastern falls to 2-1.

Michigan had 376 yards rushing. Robinson and Smith became the first Michigan players to both go over 100 rushing yards in the same game since Robinson and senior running back Michael Shaw did it last season.

Eastern dominated the first quarter with a 140-32 advantage in yardage. But two potential Eagle scoring drives were spoiled on downs at the 1-yard-line and also on a Eastern fumble.

"You have to score from the one-inch line. Can't score from the half yard line, you're going to have a hard time winning, so that hurt us," said Eastern Michigan coach Ron English. "I've said that all along we are a physical team, but the evolution of that is if we can execute consistently. I think this is the first time we faced thorough adversity.

"I give Ron (English) and his staff at Eastern a lot of credit, because they came out with a good plan and I think our kids kind of settled into it from a defensive standpoint," Hoke said. "At the end of the day with them, you needed to stop their counter play, their power play and some of the things I thought our kids did a really good job with."

Kody Fulkerson kicked a 21-yard field goal to open the second quarter for a 3-0 Eastern lead.

Then the Wolverines came back. Robinson led Michigan on a 97-yard drive including a 52-yard run. He passed 9 yards to Kevin Koger for the TD. Late in the quarter, Robinson scored on a 12-yard scamper.

Fitzgerald Toussaint's 1-yard run early in the third gave Michigan a 21-3 lead. Later in the quarter, Robinson passed 19 yards to Drew Dileo for a commanding 28-3 advantage.

In the fourth, Michigan's Brendan Gibbons booted a 21-yard field goal to cap the scoring.

Michigan had a 471-236 advantage in total yards.

While Michigan is a Big Ten member, Eastern Michigan, located five miles from Ann Arbor, plays in the Mid-American Conference. Michigan has a 9-0 lead in the all-time series.
