After two scoreless draws against Sunderland and Stoke, Arsenal is finally showing its offensive prowess after routing Southampton, 6-1, Saturday at Emirates Stadium for its second straight win in the Barclays Premier League.
Forward Gervinho delivered a brace for Arsenal, which is now tied for third place with defending champion Manchester City, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Stoke City later in the day.
Southampton trails the pack with no points after four games.
"We had a good combination of pace, speed in our passing, quick combinations, and the movement was excellent. We were a bit lucky as well because they conceded two own goals, but overall I think it was a level of continuity with what we have shown at Liverpool and today," manager Arsene Wenger said on the team's website.
Southampton failed to keep pace with Arsenal, which drew first blood in the 11th minute as defender Jos Hooiveld accidentally put one into his own net.
Lukas Podolski booted in a 25-yard free-kick as the onslaught continued before Gervinho rifled home and Nathaniel Clyne netted an own goal to make it 4-0 inside 37 minutes for Arsenal.
Daniel Fox lashed home a goal in the 45th minute before Gervinho scored another goal in the 71st minute to cap his outstanding performance.
Winger Theo Walcott netted in the final goal of the game in the 88th minute to hand Southampton and manager Nigel Adkins a fourth league defeat.
Meanwhile, midfielder Paul Scholes scored his 155th goal in his 700th Manchester United appearance while Javier Hernandez, Alexander Buttner and Nick Powell also contributed goals as United blanked Wigan Athletic, 4-0, at Old Trafford.
The win moved United to solo second place behind leading Chelsea with nine points while Wigan is locked in a four-way tie for sixth with Stoke, Aston Villa and Newcastle with four points apiece.
In other games, Chelsea dropped its first points of the campaign with a goalless draw at QPR while Swansea City tasted its first defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, 2-0.
Fulham ran out 3-0 winners against West Bromwich Albion while Norwich was held to a scoreless draw by West Ham United.
