Ben Watson buried an injury-time header as Wigan Athletic captured the FA Cup for the first time with a 1-0 upset win over favorites Manchester City at Wembley.

Watson headed Shaun Maloney's corner high into the net to sink City, which finished the game with ten men following the late dismissal of full-back Pablo Zabaleta for a second bookable offense.

It marked the first time the club has won the FA Cup in its 81-year history and the triumph sent Wigan's 30,000 fans at Wembley into raptures.

Wigan's victory also marked the biggest shock in an FA Cup final since Wimbledon upset Liverpool in 1988.

"Today it was David and Goliath," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. "It was following a dream."

"We saw the underdogs play with incredible bravery, incredible belief and they defied the odds again. That's the FA Cup," he added.

However, Wigan is hard-pressed to win its remaining assignments in the Premier League to avoid being the first team to win the FA Cup and be relegated in the same year.

The loss, for its part, meant a trophy-less campaign for City this year and raised further questions over the future of manager Roberto Mancini. Reports have it that Mancini will be replaced by Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.

City had a bright opening few minutes, getting several chances to put points on the board but Wigan goalkeeper Joel Robles thwarted efforts by Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri .

Wigan also had opportunities to score in the first half but Callum McManaman's attempt was blocked by Pablo Zabaleta.

Eighteen minutes into halftime, McManaman embarked on a dazzling run into the City box but was denied by Vincent Kompany.
