Derrick Mason won't have to worry about the cracks in the New York Jets offense any more.

The Jets have completed a trade that sends the veteran wide receiver to the Houston Texans for an undisclosed draft pick. The teams agreed to the deal late Tuesday night.

Mason signed with the Jets in August, after six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. New York coach Rex Ryan ramped up the expectations for Mason, predicting at least 80 catches for him.

Mason never made that kind of impact with 13 receptions for 115 yards and no touchdowns in five games. He was benched in favor of rookie Jeremy Kerley in New York's 30-21 loss at New England on Sunday.

"Things didn't work out on the field with Derrick," Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum said. "We got an opportunity when Houston called yesterday and when we make these decisions we look at a lot of things."

Tannenbaum insisted that the move had nothing to do with critical comments Mason made recently about the offense having cracks and only being able to improve if people were up to fixing them.

Despite comments to the contrary, the Jets appear to have made this move to fix one of them as well as send a message to the rest of the underachieving team.

New York is 2-3 and on a three-game losing streak heading into Monday night's home game against the Miami Dolphins.
