Tony Romo doesn't have to prove anything to Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett but he did show his coach and teammates something Sunday anyway. Toughness.

Romo played through a fractured rib that temporarily sidelined him in Dallas' game against the San Francisco 49ers. Romo returned and led the Cowboys to an overtime victory.

After committing two crucial turnovers in the fourth quarter of a season-opening loss to the New York Jets, Romo rebounded with a gutsy performance that helped the Cowboys pick up a much-needed victory.

"It's really about a football player," Garrett said. "It's about a competitor. Tony is that he's one of the best competitors I've ever been around.I just knew at some point I was gonna get a tap on my shoulder standing on the sideline here comes No. 9. That's what he did today."

Romo was injured on the third play of the game and finally had to go to the bench for a spell in the third quarter. He was having trouble breathing and was nauseous.

"It wasn't comfortable I'll put it that way," Romo said.

He came back to throw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Miles Austin and engineer a late drive that resulted in a field goal at the end of regulation to force overtime.

Romo then hit receiver Jesse Holley for a 77-yard completion to set up Dan Bailey's 19-yard field goal in overtime to win the game.

That was the good news, the bad is Romo's rib and injuries to Austin and running back Felix Jones.

Austin suffered a hamstring injury and could be out a couple of weeks. The injury has been nagging Austin since training camp.

Jones suffered a separated shoulder and could be sidelined a few games as well. Jones' fragile nature is one reason the team kept veteran Tashard Choice on the roster. He is a tough inside runner but doens't have big play ability.

Look for rookie DeMarco Murray to get the bulk of the work in Jones is out for an extended period
