NFL 2011 - Colts Peyton Manning May Miss Season Opener

Peyton Manning will see an end to his streak of 227 consecutive starts as Indianapolis Colts quarterback as he continues to recover from neck surgery he had in May.

Veteran signal-caller Kerry Collins will get the start Sunday vs. the Houston Texans.

Manning, one of the great competitors in league history, is upset about not playing in his team's opener.

"To say I am disappointed in not being able to play is an understatement," Manning said in a statement released by the team. "The best part about football is being out there on the field playing with my teammates. It will be tough not to be out there playing for the organization and our fans.

"I simply am not healthy enough to play, and I am doing everything I can to get my health back. The team will do fine without me, and I know for sure that I will miss them much more than they miss me."

Manning has only seen limited action in camp and reportedly complained of back pain.

There is upside to Collins, who has thrown for over 40,000 yards and guided the Giants to a Super Bowl appearance.

He has a penchant to force throws into coverage, however, creating interception opportunities for the opposing secondary.
