Peyton Manning might not need another neck operation but it's looking more and more unlikely that he will be under center to start the season.

Reports are varying on whether the Indianapolis Colts' star quarterback will require neck surgery.

ESPN reported that Manning will not need another procedure while an Indianapolis radio host tweeted that the future Hall of Famer was facing the prospect of yet another procedure on his neck.

Manning has already undergone two surgeries on his neck, including one this past off-season. He missed all of training camp and was just activated by the team from the PUP list last week.

As insurance, the Colts lured Kerry Collins out of retirement this preseason for depth and apparently as a possible replcement if Manning can't go against the Houston Texans to open the season.

Manning has been able to throw but has not been able to put his usual velocity on his throws.

Manning has made 227 consecutive starts, including playoffs, since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in 1998. That's the second-longest streak among quarterbacks in league history behind Brett Favre.

After the local sports talk radio host tweet Colts owner Jim Irsay responded via Twitter.

"There is nothing2say on Peyton's status except we move cautiously n deliberately on projecting, beyond day2day,his healing process n recovery," Irsay wrote.
