The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl title in four years and third in franchise history, when they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, in Super Bowl LVII. After trailing 24-14 at halftime, the Chiefs scored three second-half touchdowns along with the game-winning field goal in the final seconds to capture the Lombardi Trophy.
The Kansas City Chiefs erased a 10-point halftime deficit to complete an epic comeback to win Super Bowl LVII, 38-35, over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs held an eight-point advantage in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles roared back to the game at 35 apiece. Kansas City took over on offense at its own 25-yard line with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was playing on an injured ankle that he aggravated in the first half, led the Chiefs to midfield before scrambling for a 26-yard gain down inside the red zone, positioning Kansas City for a game-winning field goal. The Chiefs proceeded to run down the clock on their next several snaps to set up the go-ahead, 27-yard kick by Harrison Butker with just eight seconds remaining.
Quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES was named Super Bowl MVP for the second time in his career after completing 21 of his 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, while using his legs for 44 yards on the ground. Earlier that week, Mahomes was named the league’s MVP for the second time in his career, becoming the seventh quarterback in NFL history to earn both NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season. The last quarterback to accomplish that feat was Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams in 1999.
“He’s a great guy, a great person and he works extremely hard. He wants to be the best,” Chiefs head coach ANDY REID said of Mahomes. “And as a coach, you go, ‘What more could you ask for?’ And he handles himself the right way. He handles himself the right way in the locker room and with the front office and with the coaches. That’s a tough thing to do and still keep the locker room close. He’s been able to do that.”
The Chiefs’ offensive line played a critical role in Super Bowl LVII by not allowing a sack of the game’s MVP. The Philadelphia defense led the league with 70 sacks during the regular season, tied for the third-most by a team in a season in NFL history. Kansas City’s offensive line was the second team throughout the entire 2022 season to hold the Eagles to zero sacks, joining the Dallas Cowboys (Week 6).
On Kansas City’s opening drive, the Chiefs offense marched down the field for a TRAVIS KELCE touchdown. It marked Kelce’s 16th career postseason touchdown, surpassing Rob Gronkowski for the most postseason touchdown receptions ever by a tight end. Kelce’s Super Bowl LVII touchdown was his 14th touchdown reception in the postseason from Mahomes.
In the second quarter, second-year linebacker NICK BOLTON recovered a fumble for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14. Bolton’s touchdown was the 21st defensive touchdown scored in any Super Bowl and was the sixth scored on a defensive fumble recovery.
In the second half, Kansas City sought the help of three players who each joined the team in 2022. Rookie wide receiver SKYY MOORE, rookie running back ISIAH PACHECO and second-year wide receiver KADARIUS TONEY, who was acquired mid-season, each scored a touchdown to help Kansas City overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. Moore and Pacheco became the first set of rookie teammates to each score a touchdown in the Super Bowl since defensive tackle William Perry and defensive back Reggie Phillips both scored touchdowns in Super Bowl XX for the Chicago Bears.
On the path to Super Bowl LVII, the Chiefs finished the regular season with a 14-3 record and won the AFC West for the seventh-consecutive season, tying the 1973-79 Los Angeles Rams for the second-longest consecutive streak of division titles in NFL history. Since Reid took over in 2013, the Chiefs have recorded a winning season each year, earning a playoff berth in nine of those 10 seasons. The 2022 season marked the fifth-consecutive year the AFC Championship Game was hosted in Kansas City, tying the 1973-77 Oakland Raiders for the second-most consecutive conference championship game appearances in NFL history. Only the 2011-18 Patriots (eight consecutive) have a longer streak.
The Chiefs secured their spot in Super Bowl LVII after defeating Cincinnati, 23-20, in the AFC Championship, two years after losing to the Bengals in the same game. Defensive tackle CHRIS JONES recorded his first postseason sacks, bringing Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow to the ground twice. In the Divisional playoffs, Kansas City defeated Jacksonville, 27-20, as Kelce recorded 14 receptions, tied for the third-most ever in a postseason contest, and surpassed Julian Edelman (118) for the second-most postseason receptions in history.
