Duke has named its former All-America Jon Scheyer as a special assistant for the 2013-14 season.

This was announced by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who calls Scheyer "one of the greatest young men to ever wear the Duke uniform."

His hiring fills a hole that opened after longtime Duke assistant Chris Collins left to take over at Northwestern. Nate James was promoted from special assistant to replace Collins on the staff, and Scheyer was brought in to replace James.

This marks Scheyer's first coaching position.

His duties as special assistant will include assisting the coaching staff in developing game strategies, breaking down game film, planning practices and contributing in staff meetings.

Scheyer lettered at Duke from 2007-10 and helped lead the Blue Devils to two ACC Championships and the 2010 NCAA Championship.

A native of Northbrook, Ill., Scheyer ended his Duke career with 2,077 points to rank 10th on Duke's all-time scoring

list. He ranks third all-time at Duke in made free throws (608) and free throw percentage (.861), fourth in three-point field goals (297) and three-point field goal attempts (780) and sixth in free throw attempts (706). He played in 144 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest streak in school history.

As a senior during the 2009-10 season, Scheyer took over the starting point guard duties for the Blue Devils and averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game to guide the Blue Devils to the program's fourth national championship.

He was named second team All-America, first team All-ACC and first team ACC All-Tournament that year.

Following his graduation from Duke in 2010, Scheyer played professionally with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA Developmental League and overseas with the Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Gran Canaria organizations.
