Boston, MA

Joffrey Lupul scored two goals and Phil Kessel added a decisive tally in the third as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Boston Bruins, 4-2, to tie the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at 1-1 Saturday before a sellout crowd at TD Garden.

Celebrating his 24th birthday, James van Riemsdyk added an insurance goal in the third for his second goal of the series while James Reimer added 39 saves for the Maple Leafs, who will host Game 3 Monday at Air Canada Centre.

"We talked about not being happy with the way we played," said Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf. "We knew that, and I thought we responded really well tonight."

Tuukka Rask tallied 28 saves while Nathan Horton and Johnny Boychuk provided the offense with a goal each for the Bruins, who outshot the Maple Leafs, 41-32.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead 1:56 into the second when Nathan Horton deflected home a puck while coming to a stop in the crease in front of Reimer.

With Boston captain Zdeno Chara in the penalty box for tripping, the Leafs tied the game 5:18 into the second when Lupul got Jake Gardiner's miss and swept it into the right corner of the net past Rask.

Lupul scored his second goal at 11:56 to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead at the break. Matt Frattin made a nice dish from the bottom of the right circle across the crease to Lupul, who lofted his attempt over Rask to give Toronto a one-goal advantage.

In the third, Kessel stunned the sellout crowd at the arena he used to call home when he scored on a breakaway 53 seconds into the third period to give Toronto a 3-1 lead.

It was Kessel's first even-strength goal in 24 matches against the Bruins, where he three seasons before moving to the Maple Leafs.

"I'm happy for him," Phaneuf said of Kessel. "I think he's been playing really well for us, he's had a big year again for us. Obviously, with a lot of attention paid to him here in Boston, it was nice to see him get rewarded. He's been playing great for us."

The Bruins pulled within 3-2 when Boychuk's blast from the right point appeared to deflect off Toronto's Tyler Bozak and past goalie James Reimer at 10:35.

Tyler Seguin was battling with Bozak in the slot at the time the puck was deflected in front. Following a video review, referee Dan O'Rourke ruled that the goal was legal.

With the Maple Leafs clinging to a precarious 3-2 lead, van Riemsdyk scored off a splendid backhand attempt while falling to the ice with 3:07 remaining in regulation to give the visitors the insurance goal.
