I've heard my girlfriends rave about the Brazilian Blowout. What is it exactly, and is it right for me?

My clients can’t get enough of Brazilian Blowouts! The treatment smoothes the hair cuticle so that your do has less frizz and reflects more light, making it look shinier and healthier. The semipermanent process involves a combination of keratin and proteins, which are applied to the hair and then fused on with a flatiron. It only takes 90 minutes, lasts 10 to 12 weeks and reduces a client's blow-drying time by at least half. Most women who have it done can style their hair easily with just a blow-dryer and their fingers.

The Brazilian Blowout works on almost every hair type, including colored hair. It is a smoothing treatment, not a straightening one -- meaning it relaxes curls but does not take them away completely. So if you have gentle waves, you may have straight hair afterwards; but if you have very curly hair, you will likely have soft, frizz-free curls as a result. Those with thick hair are left with smoothed-down locks that look and feel lighter. It works for fine hair too; the proteins plump up the hair shaft so it looks fuller. A lot of my clients worry that Brazilian Blowouts will damage colored hair, but on the contrary, it’s a perfect complement to colored hair and makes hair brighter.

To make the treatment last longer, wash hair every other day and look for shampoos and conditioners that don’t contain sulfates. A weekly, deep-conditioning mask will also help keep hair healthy.

If you’re still questioning if the Brazilian Blowout is right for you, ask those friends who were raving about their treatments for the name of their stylist and schedule a consultation before booking an appointment.
