Mets' Matt Harvey to Undergo Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

New York Mets' starting pitcher Matt Harvey will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder to address thoracic outlet syndrome.

Harvey is no stranger to the disabled list.

In 2013, Harvey made the All-Star team by going 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA in 26 starts. He also finished fourth in Cy Young voting that season. The 6-foot-4 right-hander looked like a bonafide ace set for a dominant career, but he missed the entire 2014 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Oct. 22, 2013.

This TOS surgery is the latest setback for "The Dark Knight," whose 4.86 ERA through 17 starts this season was by far the worst mark of his career.

His ERA ballooned, his WHIP was up and he was no longer overpowering batters with strikeouts. On top of all that, the velocity on Harvey's pitches was down across the board compared to 2015.

The numbers suggested something wasn't right with Harvey, so perhaps this injury news shouldn't come as a shock. That's little consolation for Mets fans, however, as the 2015 National League champs sit three games back in the NL East and are in the thick of the Wild Card hunt.

Considering other Mets starters Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz have both been dealing with bone spurs in their pitching elbows, the pitching staff's health has been a major concern in the Big Apple.

With two serious surgeries now under Harvey's belt, it's reasonable to wonder if he'll ever return to the ace form he displayed throughout 2013.
