Chicago Cubs Introduce First Mascot in Team's Modern History

Chicago, IL

Giving in to clamor from fans, the Chicago Cubs have introduced the franchise's first official mascot in its modern history

The Cubs officially introduced Clark, a "young, friendly Cub" who wears a baseball cap backward and will greet fans as they enter Wrigley Field.

"The Cubs are thrilled to welcome Clark as the team's official mascot," Cubs senior director of marketing Alison Miller said in a statement. "Clark is a young, friendly Cub who can't wait to interact with our other young Cubs fans."

"He'll be a welcoming presence for families at Wrigley Field and an excellent ambassador for the team in the community," Miller added.

Clark, named after the Clark and Addison intersection where Wrigley is located, will be introduced during a charity appearance Monday night. The Cubs say Clark's great-grandfather Joa was the franchise's original live Bears mascot in 1916.

The Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are now the only teams in Major League Baseball without official mascots.

Indians replace Chief Wahoo as primary logo

Cleveland, OH

The Cleveland Indians have replaced Chief Wahoo, the team's symbol since the 1940s, with a block letter "C" they introduced recently.

Before making the change, the Indians surveyed fans about Chief Wahoo but the team did not reveal the results.

However, the Indians are not completely eliminating Chief Wahoo as it would still appear on caps and jersey sleeves.

In past seasons, the Indians removed Chief Wahoo from their road uniform and reduced his visibility at spring training in Arizona, where more Native Americans live.

Aside from the Indians, the Pittsburgh Pirates also made a similar move, replacing eyepatch-wearing Jolly Roger in favor of gold "P".
