Forums Relieving Community Census Fears
A U. S. Census Bureau forum in east Arlington wasn't as popular as organizers had hoped. Instead of the 500 they were expecting, a few dozen showed up. The forum was focused on the Hispanic community around Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Arlington to deliver three messages. "The census is easy, it's important, it's safe."
Dallas Zoo Offering Spring Break Curriculum
For many North Texas schools, Spring Break comes as a much-needed break.
But at the Dallas Zoo, it is a time to enhance the experience of
learning about wildlife and conservation through various educational
programs. Animal sculptures and artwork are just part of the curriculum found at
the Dallas Zoo, even for students as young as pre-school.
Cruz Rewarding Rangers For Their Patience
Two years ago, Nelson Cruz didn't even make the Rangers' roster out of
spring training. No other team claimed him and he was sent to
Triple-A Oklahoma, where he had an MVP season. Cruz hit 33
homers with 20 stolen bases last season for the Rangers, making the
All-Star team last summer. He is now unquestionably their starting right
fielder.
Hamilton's Hand Is OK, But Tooth Is Hurting
Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton's left hand is OK after being hit
by a pitch. Now he has a toothache. Hamilton arrived at the
Rangers clubhouse Tuesday morning with a swollen face, and then went to
the dentist for what is believed to be an infected tooth.
Mexican Tour Bus Overturns In South Texas
A tour bus headed for Mexico carrying 40 people overturned along a
southern Texas highway on Tuesday, killing at least two people and
injuring an unknown number of others, officials said. The accident happened around 10 a.m. on southbound Interstate 37,
about 45 miles south of San Antonio, Texas Department of Public Safety
spokesman Tom Vinger told The Associated Press. He said investigators
suspect equipment failure may have caused the crash.
American Airlines Wants Exemption From Tarmac Rule
Add American Airlines to the list of carriers that want out of the
government's new rule to limit the time passengers can be held on the
tarmac. American has filed for a temporary exemption with the Department of
Transportation, saying delays caused by the closure of the main runway
at New York's JFK airport could cost them millions in fines.
Train Catches Fire After Wreck In Saginaw
A collision between a Union Pacific freight train and a military truck
in Saginaw sparked a fire that damaged a locomotive and left an engineer
slightly hurt. Union Pacific spokeswoman Raquel
Espinoza-Williams said Tuesday that crossing lights and gates were
operating at the time of the accident Monday night. The cause of the
wreck is sought.
Dallas Jail Guard Fired Over Anti-Gay Remarks
A Dallas County jail guard recently fired after allegedly making
anti-gay remarks and commenting about religion has said his free speech
rights have been violated but he will not seek to regain his job. A sheriff's department review concluded Stephen Johnson, 59,
persisted in volunteering his religious opinions and speaking out
against homosexuality.
