The 2010 Census is Coming to Atlanta!
If you've been watching TV lately, you've almost certainly seen commercials letting everyone know the 2010 census forms are being distributed this month. The commercials aren't exactly the most persuasive ads and probably do little to motivate you to actually fill out and return your form. Maybe today's story in the AJC will help bring it home for you. I was surprised to hear that due to low response during the last census, Dekalb County claims to have missed out on $41 million in funding. They estimate about a quarter of the county's residents weren't counted. That means Dekalb only got enough money to service three-fourths of their actual residents. Federal funding obtained from census data goes to programs like transit, roads, health care, schools, parks and public safety. The county urges everyone to fill out and return their forms, mentioning that undocumented residents should not avoid participation for fear of being arrested or deported. So please, take a few moments to complete your census form and make sure your community gets the funding that it deserves. The 2010 Census is Coming to Atlanta! originally appeared on About.com Atlanta on Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 09:38:34.

Bison Stops Traffic on I-20 in Atlanta
Traffic came to an unusual halt today on I-20 east of downtown Atlanta when a buffalo fell from a trailer and ended up in the middle of the highway. The story ends sadly, as the bison was hit by a car, badly injured and eventually put out of his misery by a man with a rifle. This is not the first animal-meets-road incident Atlanta has seen. Just last week, a zebra from the circus was loose on the Connector. Luckily, that animal was able to be safely removed from danger. Does Georgia Need a New State Bird?
An article in the AJC profiles the efforts of Georgia restaurateur Chris Cunningham to change the state bird from a brown thrasher to a chicken. Cunningham argues that the brown thrasher is nice but hasn't done much for the state of Georgia, whereas chickens actually bring in a substantial amount of income. His website, Flip the Birds, is dedicated to the cause. While I appreciate the clever campaign name, I also think its maybe a little bit strange to have a state bird that brings in income due to being killed and eaten. We don't eat bald eagles, now do we? Also, though I'm sure the brown thrasher isn't all that ferocious, I can't imagine a hockey team named "The Chickens" would go over well with fans! Does Georgia Need a New State Bird? originally appeared on About.com Atlanta on Thursday, February 25th, 2010 at 10:35:07.
Finding Deals and Discounts in Atlanta
The internet and the current economic slump have created a world in which no one expects to pay full price. Now, my marketing background would argue that this is not a good strategy for anyone involved, long term. However, for those looking to score deals on dining and entertainment, its great news for the time being. Here are a few of my favorite sites for scoring deals and discounts in Atlanta: Scoutmob: Scoutmob is a great site because all the deals are free, so there's no need to worry that you may never cash in on that coupon. Just collect a new one each day for discounts like 50% off at local restaurants. DailyDeal Atlanta: Like Scoutmob, DailyDeal offers a new deal each day, but in this case you have to cough up a little cash to get your discount (think a $50 gift certificate for only $20). Steals range from restaurants to spa deals to random offers like parking discounts. Atlanta on the Cheap: Blogger Jennifer does a fantastic job of rounding up all the discounts and free events in town and putting them in bite-sized blogs for your reading pleasure. Also check out the calendar of deals organized by day. Finding Deals and Discounts in Atlanta originally appeared on About.com Atlanta on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 at 17:00:53.
