The Chicago Bears announced that defensive tackle Henry Melton will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee Sunday.

Coach Marc Trestman said Melton, who received the Bears' franchise tag in the offseason, is "terribly disappointed" with the development.

"We lost a very good player," Trestman said. "Unfortunately it's a next-man-up situation where the next guy has to come up and be ready to play and help our football team."

"We're not happy about it, but the downside of the National Football League is players are going to get hurt, and the team has to rest," he added.

Melton suffered the injury during the Bears' 40-23 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He left the game with 12:58 to play after he fell awkwardly while trying to make a move as he was engaged with a Pittsburgh player.

He was carted off the field after suffering the injury and underwent an MRI on Monday morning.

Melton suffered a concussion during the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers that slowed him through the first two games of the season. He didn't have a sack after coming off a 2012 campaign in which he had six.

Melton has 13 sacks since 2011, which ranks second among defensive tackles during that span.

Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson loses part of finger

Glendale, AZ

Arizona Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson underwent surgery after he lost the top of his left middle finger just above the knuckle during Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Doctors shaved down the bone in the finger to prevent infection but there were no plans to reattach the finger.

Johnson's injury may take a few weeks to heal but Cardinals coach Bruce Arians left the door open for him to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday.

"It's day to day," Arians said. "It's just a matter of pain tolerance."

Johnson said the injury occurred just before halftime during a punt return by the Saints' Darren Sproles. He was unsure how it happened and will watch game film Monday to try to get a better idea.

Johnson realized that he was hurt when he looked down and saw blood coming out of his glove. Then he discovered the significance of the injury when he pulled his hand out of his glove and the fingertip was still in it.
