With 3 consecutive victories on the Grand Prix Circuit in the Men's 100 meters, Asafa Powell appears to have emerged as the favorite to win the Men's 100 meters at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Asafa Powell holds 5 of the 8 best times ever in the 100 meters and seems to be peaking at just the right time.

However, the other two favorites, fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt and American sprinter Tyson Gay appear to be ready as well.

The showdown for the men's 100 meters and the title of world's fastest man begins on August 15.

Asafa Powell has run the 100 meters in under 10 seconds 39 times. Only American sprinter Maurice Greene has performed better by runnning under 10 seconds 52 times. Powell is one of only two men to have run sub-9.80 seconds more than once, having done so five times. Fellow Jamaican and current world record holder Usain Bolt being is the other with two sub-9.80 seconds performances.

Recently former World Record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica, defeated the current World Record holder, and fellow countrymen, Usain Bolt by a hundredth of a second, to take the gold at the 2008 IAAF Super Grand Prix with a time of 9.88 seconds.
