Jets Chad Morton Sets Kickoff TD Return Record

CHAD MORTON, kick returner for the New York Jets, became the first player in NFL history to return kickoffs for touchdowns in regulation and overtime in a single game.

Morton’s 96-yard return of the opening kickoff 14 seconds into overtime enabled the Jets to defeat the Buffalo Bills 37-31. It marked the shortest overtime period in NFL history.

His overtime return marked only the second time in league history that the opening kickoff of an overtime period was returned for a touchdown (DAVE WILLIAMS, Chi., vs. Detroit, Nov. 27, 1980).

Morton’s two touchdown returns also tied the NFL single-game record with four other players.

Players who have returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a single game:

TIMMY BROWN (Philadelphia vs. Dallas, 11/6/1966)

TRAVIS WILLIAMS (Green Bay vs. Cleveland, 11/12/1967)

RON BROWN (L.A. Rams vs. Green Bay, 11/24/1985)

TYRONE HUGHES (New Orleans vs. L.A. Rams, 10/231994)

CHAD MORTON (New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills, 9/8/2002)

Chad Morton is only the second player in NFL History who has returned the opening kickoff of an overtime period for a touchdown since the NFL instituted sudden-death overtime in 1974.

DAVE WILLIAMS was the first (Chicago vs. Detroit, 11/27/1980)
