NFL Super Bowl XIX: 49ers 38, Dolphins 16
The 49ers Defeat the Dolphins 38-16 to win Super Bowl XIX, 49ers QB Joe Montana named MVP
HOME > SPORTS > FOOTBALL > SUPER BOWLS
The San Francisco 49ers captured their second Super Bowl title with a dominating offense and a defense that tamed Miami's explosive passing attack.
Not only did Montana pass for 331 yards and three touchdowns, but he also scrambled for 59 yards on five carries, including a six-yard score midway through the third quarter. Running back Roger Craig was Montana's favorite target, hauling in seven receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
In all, Montana accounted for 390 of the 49ers' Super Bowl-record 537 offensive yards.
The Dolphins held a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period, which represented the most points scored by two teams in an opening quarter of a Super Bowl. However, the 49ers used excellent field position in the second period to build a 28-16 halftime lead.
Running back Roger Craig set a Super Bowl record by scoring three touchdowns on pass receptions of eight and 16 yards and a run of two yards.
San Francisco's Joe Montana was voted the game's most valuable player. He joined Green Bay's Bart Starr and Pittsburgh's Terry Bradshaw as the only two-time Super Bowl most valuable players.
Montana completed 24 of 35 passes for a Super Bowl-record 331 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed five times for 59 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown.
Craig had 58 yards on 15 carries and caught seven passes for 77 yards. Wendell Tyler rushed 13 times for 65 yards and had four catches for 70 yards.
Dwight Clark had six receptions for 77 yards, while Russ Francis had 5 for 60.
San Francisco's 537 total net yards bettered the previous Super Bowl record of 429 yards by Oakland in Super Bowl XI. The 49ers also held a time of possession advantage over the Dolphins of 37:11 to 22:49.
Super Bowl XIX: MVP Joe Montana, QB, San Francisco 49ers
Joe Montana became the third player to win multiple Super Bowl MVPs -- joining Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw -- with his performance in a dominant 38-16 win over the Dan Marino-led Miami Dolphins.
Montana led the 49ers to their second Super Bowl title in three years. He passed for a Super Bowl-record 331 yards, completing 24 of 35 passes. Three of those completions were for touchdowns and Montana added a rushing touchdown.
The second quarter was the turning point for the 49ers. Trailing 10-7 after the initial 15 minutes (the 49ers' score came on an 33-yard pass from Montana to running back Carl Monroe), San Francisco put together three scoring drives before halftime. At the end of the first drive, Montana threw an 8-yard pass to running back Roger Craig to retake the lead.
A few minutes later, Montana scored on a 6-yard run. For the game, Montana rushed 5 times for 59 yards. A 2-yard rushing score by Craig completed the 49ers' turnaround quarter. In the second half, Montana kept the San Francisco offense humming, driving for a field goal and throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Craig in the fourth. The 49ers' 537 total yards of offense set a Super Bowl record.
