MDA says Q1 profit rose 23 per cent; strong C$ cuts into revenues
"A higher level of sales activity this quarter was offset by foreign exchange translation adjustments" - MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX:MDA), which had the sale of its space division to a U.S. defence contractor officially blocked by Ottawa last week, said profit in the first quarter rose 23 per cent, but revenues fell due to the appreciation of the loonie. Vancouver-based MDA reported first-quarter earnings of $26 million or 64 cents per share on revenues of $290 million for the quarter ended March 31. That compared to profit of $21 million or 49 cents per share on revenues of $306 million for the first quarter of 2007. Read more
Leon's same-store sales sag in Q1; sales bulk up on Appliance Canada purchase
"Going forward we need to renew our emphasis on reducing expenses and improving store efficiencies" - Leon's Furniture Ltd. (TSX:LNF) increased its first-quarter sales by nine per cent over a year earlier to $196.4 million, raising its net income narrowly by 2.5 per cent to $11.1 million. Leon's, with 35 corporate and 29 franchise furniture and appliance stores across Canada, said Monday the top-line increase came from the Jan. 1 acquisition of Appliance Canada, while overall "we experienced slower sales across the country with same-store corporate sales being down by 1.3 per cent compared to the prior year."
