Hair Trend Alert: Ombre Color

You may or may not have heard the term “ombre,” which is French for “shadow” or “gradation.”

Either way, it’s everywhere.

Also known as “lived-in” or “melted” color, ombre is the dark-to-light transition of hair color. This trend was born out of unusual circumstances -- the economy. What used to look like hair that’s in dire need of a touch-up has become the latest thing to hit salons.

What does the economy have to do with color trends? A whole lot, it seems.

As a general rule, hair follows fashion. As the financial crisis began to spin its scary web, everyone was affected -- even the runways.

We started seeing demure, less flashy styles hitting the magazine stands. Designers were pulling back, and hair followed suit with less drama and a more lived-in feel. Ta da, ombre!

One big advantage is how gentle melted highlights are on the budget.

Instead of seeing your colorist every six weeks to keep that blond looking like it’s growing out of your scalp, you can chill out a bit and get the beachy look that little girls living near the ocean get: darker roots with thick golden or copper highlights to the tips.

Even as the economy picks up its pace and things start to feel a lot more normal, ombre is sticking around. It’s actually hotter than ever. Maybe it even represents a new cultural approach to beauty. Maybe we were all wound up a little too tightly before with our perfect, skinny blond highlights. Maybe a little ombre is just what we all needed.
