New Repel® Lemon Eucalyptus, as effective as DEET, without the chemicals

Many people are changing their perceptions about mosquitoes - from an itchy annoyance to a potential health risk. Already this year, reports of mosquito-borne encephalitis (West Nile and St. Louis) have been recorded in central Florida and Louisiana. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 20,000 confirmed cases of insect-related illnesses in humans are reported each year.

DEET-based repellents have always been the gold standard in protection against biting insects. Yet because more and more Americans desire "natural" products, repellent manufacturers have been struggling to develop an effective, long-lasting, non-chemical version. Finally one manufacturer, the makers of Repel® brand insect repellents, has found a solution. Repel Lemon Eucalyptus is the first naturally based insect repellent in the United States that is as effective as leading DEET-based products.

Named after the eucalyptus citriodora tree from which it is derived, Repel Lemon Eucalyptus takes advantage of the natural repellent properties of eucalyptus leave oils to provide a long-lasting, natural alternative to traditional, chemical-based insect repellents. The formula was first discovered and developed by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and has been marketed in Europe since the mid-1990s.

Available in four-ounce tubes of easy-to-apply lotion, Repel Lemon Eucalyptus is safe for the whole family and can be found in retail stores nationwide for an average price of $5.

Long-Lasting Protection

Lemon Eucalyptus is EPA registered and has been rigorously tested by independent laboratories in accordance with strict government guidelines. Tests revealed Lemon Eucalyptus performs as well as traditional DEET-based insect repellent formulas, providing up to eight hours of bite-free protection from mosquitoes and up to six hours of protection against ticks and no-see-ums.

Reduce the Risk

Wearing an effective insect repellent isn't the only step necessary to help prevent insect bites and the potential diseases they carry. Other easy steps to consider include:

  • Wearing a hat and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing (avoid wearing red)

  • Eliminate mosquito breading areas by emptying children's swimming pools when not in use, frequently changing water in birdbaths and cleaning out gutters

  • Avoid using scented soaps and shampoos, lotions, oils or perfumes, including tanning products

  • Consider appropriate lighting, incandescent lights attract mosquitoes, while florescent lights neither attract nor repel them

Early Treatment with Bayer Drug Can Drastically Lower the Risk of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease
First international study on the prevention of diabetes; Better and more cost-effective treatment possible. Patients with impaired glucose tolerance who receive treatment with acarbose at an early stage can not only prevent type II (adult-onset) diabetes from developing but can also drastically lower the risk of cardiovascular complications such as myocardial infarction. These findings of the large-scale international STOP-NIDDM Study were recently presented at the 21st International Bayer Pharma Press Seminar in Munich. "The clock starts ticking long before diabetes is diagnosed," warned the Principal Investigator of the Study, Professor Jean-Louis Chiasson from Montreal, Canada. According to Professor Chiasson, the findings of the STOP-NIDDM Study confirm that impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), a condition regarded as a precursor stage to diabetes, has to be treated at an early stage if cardiovascular complications which frequently take a fatal course are to be avoided.
