by Kelly Hoffman
Kyla Duffy is known for her dog projects, but she is certainly no stranger to kitties. She shares her home with her husband, two rescue cats and her Boston terrier, Bill. Bill is the inspiration behind Duffy’s Happy Tails Books, an organization that publishes books that give rescue dogs a voice.
Happy Tails Books recently released its first book about cats, Lost Souls: Found! Inspiring Stories About Cats. Duffy took some time to talk about her projects and the new book.
The Daily Cat: Are there plans for more cat-related books after the newly released Lost Souls: Found! Inspiring Stories About Cats?
Kyla Duffy:
I have to admit that our Inspiring Stories About Cats turned out to be one of my favorite books. The stories people submitted were just so heartfelt -- these adopted cats obviously had a big impact on their lives. We would love to do another cat book. If we receive enough stories from people about their adopted/fostered cats (at least 65 to 70 stories), we will most certainly do another addition.
TDC: You have two rescued kitties. Can you share their stories?
K.D.:
When my boyfriend (at the time) and I decided to get a cat, we only considered adoption. We found a great organization in Denver that kept its cats in foster homes, so we went to one to meet a new litter. We brought a laser pointer and figured we'd take home the most fun kitten, which turned out to be Tux. (Guess what colors he is. ...)
I never had a cat, but Tux was so wonderful that we decided to get another. We went to Cat Care Society in Denver and adopted Chewie, a male tabby. Chewie was found in a field at about 16 weeks old, neutered, and we adopted him the next day -- Tux was born in a laundry room and was weaned at the appropriate age. Chewie has a strong desire to be outdoors, while Tux couldn't care less. I keep them both inside, however.
TDC: Thank you for speaking with us! Is there anything else you would like to add?
K.D.:
I'd like to encourage readers to consider volunteering with a cat rescue, as there is such a need. Volunteers are needed in many areas, like fostering, transport, bookkeeping, feral colony caretaking, etc. Also, if you have any shopping to do for pet-loving friends, please check out HappyTailsBooks.com. We've got gifts for dog and cat lovers, including stationery, hand-crafted glass ornaments, and books. No less than 25 percent of our net profits are donated back to rescue organizations. Lastly, if you have a great story about an adopted cat, please send it over to us at HappyTailsBooks.com!
