NFL 2003 Playoff Perrenial
Steelers & 49ers in Postseason Chase
The Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers conjure images of rotating Lombardi Trophies and seemingly annual playoff seasons.
On ABC’s NFL Monday Night Football this week, the teams will scrap to establish a springboard for the 2003 NFL playoff stretch.
At halftime, America will be treated to the 49ers’ honoring of Pro Football Hall of Famer RONNIE LOTT. Part of four San Francisco Super Bowl championship teams ( Super Bowl XIX, Super Bowl XXIII, Super Bowl XXIV, Super Bowl XXIX), Lott will be the 10th 49er to have his number (No. 42) retired.
Playoff participants in eight of 11 seasons under head coach BILL COWHER, Pittsburgh (3-6) stands two games out of first place in the AFC North with seven remaining. The Steelers tied a team season-high with four touchdowns last Sunday in their win over Arizona. HINES WARD, the AFC receptions leader (60), caught two TDs, and now has five in the past three games.
Defensively, Pittsburgh ranks fourth in the NFL (286.1). Last week, linebacker JASON GILDON (76.0) recorded 3.0 sacks to become the club’s all-time leader in the category, surpassing 2004 Pro Football Hall of Fame Semifinalist L.C. GREENWOOD (73.5). With a taste of victory still in their mouths, the Steelers are fixed on increasing their win total.
"We have seven more one-game seasons," says Pittsburgh linebacker JAMES FARRIOR. "That’s how we’ve got to look at it. There are seven more one-game seasons left and we have to win every one."
Working on Mondays usually brings desired results for the 4-5 49ers. San Francisco is 36-22 (.621) all-time in front of ABC’s cameras, tying them for the second-most Monday night wins in history (with Oakland; Miami has the most MNF victories with 38). The club is 15-5 (.750) in its past 20 Monday night games.
Linebacker JULIAN PETERSON has been among the most consistent 49ers this season with a club-best 4.0 sacks (third-most among NFL linebackers), two interceptions, 83 tackles and four passes defensed.
San Francisco running back GARRISON HEARST also will be a player to watch. The 49ers are 7-1 (.875) in Monday night games with Hearst in the lineup and it’s not coincidental – the 11-year veteran from Georgia has averaged 115.1 rushing yards in those games.
"It is going to be a heck of a football game," says 49ers head coach DENNIS ERICKSON. "There is no question about it."
The 49ers and Steelers are two games behind their division leaders after 9 games.
Since 1990, 30 teams which trailed their division leader by two or more games at this point in the season went on to qualify for the playoffs. Three of those 30 teams rallied to win their division.
A look at clubs who won their division after trailing by two or more games after nine games since 1990:
|TEAM||SEASON||RECORD AFTER 9||FINAL RECORD|
|San Diego Chargers||1992||4-5||11-5|
|San Francisco 49ers||2003||4-5||?|
BACKUPS MOVING FORWARD:
Since 1990, in their first start after replacing an injured starter, 49er backup quarterbacks have led their team to victory in seven of eight games (.875).
San Francisco quarterback TIM RATTAY, who will start Monday night in place of an injured JEFF GARCIA, this year recorded the second-highest passer rating (110.7) among those quarterbacks. A look at the 49ers’ backup quarterbacks in their first start after replacing an injured starter (since 1990):
BACK ON THE WEST COAST
Although this is the second West Coast trip for the Steelers (Seattle on November 2), it is the third this year for Pittsburgh Chairman DAN ROONEY, President ART ROONEY and their families.
The Rooneys this spring retraced many of the steps of the Lewis & Clark Expedition that took place 200 years ago this year. MERIWETHER LEWIS and WILLIAM CLARK began their famous journey in Pittsburgh on August 31, 1803. The expedition took three years and opened the west for future development.
The Rooney family traced much of the trail for three weeks, ending in Astoria, Oregon where Lewis and Clark built Fort Clatsop.
"We needed a vacation when we got home," said Dan Rooney.

Pittsburgh assistant trainer ARIKO ISO returns to the West Coast as the first full-time female trainer in the NFL.
"I’m not intimidated," says Iso. "I never had as a goal to be the first female professional, but I now know that a lot of people had that as their goal."
Iso has more than 10 years of experience. She earned her master's degree from San Jose State University in California's Silicon Valley in 1995. There, she had experience treating elite athletes during the 1994 World Cup soccer games and the East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game. In 1997, Iso treated U.S. track athletes when they traveled to a meet in Japan. She then moved on to Portland State, where she worked with basketball players before turning her attention to football.
Nearly half of the nation's certified athletic trainers are women.
