Jozy Altidore scored on a 73rd-minute strike to push the United States past Honduras 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah.

The United States' Eddie Johnson made the first real attempt on a goal in the 17th minute, which was stopped by Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares.

In the closing moments of the second half, Honduran Andy Najar unleashed a 16-yard shot from the right that was parried by US goalie Tim Howard.

Overall, Honduras frustrated the United States in the opening 45 minutes.

US coach Juergen Klinsmann had to push the team to up their tempo and speed.

In the 56th minute, Graham Zusi executed a curling free kick into the box that was met by a wide open Clint Dempsey header but landed right in front of Valladares for the relatively easy save.

Dempsey was again the recipient of a Zusi cross in the 70th minute, but he headed the ball right at Valladares.

The Americans (4-1-1, 13 points) remained atop the six-nation regional World Cup qualifying standings with four games left. Three teams are assured World Cup berths next year.
