Toronto, Canada

Jose Villareal delivered a stunning stoppage-time goal to help the defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy salvage a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC Saturday before 18,335 spectators at BMO Field.

Mike Magee also scored his league-leading fifth goal of the season as the Galaxy (2-0-2) welcomed back star forward Landon Donovan, who returned to the club earlier this week following his winter hiatus.

Donovan, who had not appeared in a competitive match since the Galaxy's MLS Cup win last December, entered the game for youngster Jack McBean in the 61st minute and was immediately given the captain's armband by veteran defender Todd Dunivant.

He immediately made an impact when some poor defending by Toronto in the midfield allowed Magee to send Donovan in alone on goalkeeper Joe Bendik.

However, his time away from the game took its effect as Donovan scuffed his shot. After that, he didn't figure prominently over the final 25 minutes of the match.

Donovan's return was almost spoiled by goals from Robert Earnshaw and rookie Jonathan Osorio, who almost gave Toronto FC (1-2-1) its second win in as many games at home this season.

Earnshaw scored his team-high fourth goal in the 29th minute off a bad back pass from Galaxy defender Leo Gonzalez to erase a Magee goal in the 16th minute.

Then, Osorio scored his first career MLS goal with assists from star midfielder Luis Silva in the 78th minute to give TFC a late 2-1 lead.

Silva, who returned from injury and made the first appearance of his sophomore campaign as a second-half substitute, skirted defender Omar Gonzalez on the left flank and beat him to the end line before skipping a cross into the box that Osorio pounded home.

However, it was Villarreal who made the biggest mark in the game after scoring the game-tying goal in the second minute of stoppage time on a scissor kick.

Los Angeles returns to action Wednesday against Mexican side Monterrey in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals at the Home Depot Center.
