Detroit, MI

Henrik Zetterberg will be named the next captain of the Detroit Red Wings, replacing the retired Nicklas Lidstrom.

This will mark only the second time since 1986 that the Detroit Red Wings will have a new captain.

Lidstrom succeeded long time team captain Steve Yzerman in 2006 and became the first European captain to win the Stanley Cup.

Zetterberg was an alternate captain during Lidstrom's captaincy. He's entering his tenth season with the Red Wings.

The Swede scored 22 goals and 47 assists last season. His 69 points were his lowest total since 2

A 1999 seventh-round pick, Zetterberg has 624 points in 668 games, and 102 points in 109 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He was part of the Wings' 2008 Stanley Cup champions, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy after leading the playoffs in goals and points.

He spent the lockout playing in Switzerland where he had 16 goals and 16 assists in 23 games for Zug.

Pavel Datsyuk and Niklas Kronwall will remain as alternate captains.
