Vail, CO
Outgoing Denver Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri has agreed in principle to join the Toronto Raptors.
He will be replacing his old boss, as former general manager Bryan Colangelo was placed on the team's business side this month.
Ujiri's deal is expected to include five guaranteed years and is worth about $15 million. He was making about $500,000 annually with the Nuggets, though it's believed they offered a raise to $1.2 million annually in an attempt to persuade him to stay.
The Raptors held off on interviewing other candidates while waiting for Ujiri's decision after his Vail, Colorado meeting with Tim Leiweke, the new President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which owns the team.
Ujiri, the 2012-13 NBA Executive of the Year, spent the past three seasons with the Nuggets after joining the front office August 2010. Prior to that, he worked for the Raptors as their director of global scouting and assistant general manager. Ujiri also was an international scout for the Nuggets from 2003-07.
Denver won a franchise-record 57 games before falling to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs this season.
He'll take on a Toronto team that went 34-48 last season and shook up its roster by trading for the Memphis Grizzlies' Rudy Gay in late January.
