Caffe Shakerato con Gelato
Shake it up: Coffee and desert in one glass
For a summertime treat that's a snap -- or a shake -- to create, consider the shakerato. This gelato-infused version makes a quick yet elegant after-dinner coffee and dessert rolled into one.
Caffe shakerato is an Italian warm-weather drink that typically consists of espresso, sugar and ice agitated in a cocktail shaker until smooth and frothy. Some baristas use gelato in place of the sugar and ice, and the result is like a drinkable affogato or a cold latte -- creamy, bittersweet and refreshing. We like to add a crowning twist of lemon peel, which gives the drink a fragrant, citrus dimension.
If you don't have gelato available, you could try this with ice cream. You're not limited to vanilla, either. Chocolate would be lovely, or you could make it a double with a scoop of espresso gelato.
Caffe Shakerato con Gelato
Makes 1 drink.
1 modest scoop vanilla gelato
1 shot room temperature espresso
1 lemon twist or spiral
Place gelato and espresso in a cocktail shaker (or a Mason jar) and shake vigorously until gelato is melted. Pour into a cocktail glass.
Gently twist or bend the lemon to squeeze out some of the citrus oils and rub it around the rim of the glass. Drop the lemon into the glass and serve.
